History of Ueno Gift Park in ▋

In 1625, during the shogunate period in Japan, the third-generation general Tokugawa established the Hiroyong Temple of Toshiyama in the direction of the "ghost gate" of Edo (that is, the northeast). This temple also became the Bodhi Temple of the Tokugawa family and ranked alongside the Sengshang Temple as the general's tomb. In this vast temple area, there are also temples such as clear Water Guanyin Hall and Paradise, which can be said to be the belief center of the local people at that time, and the scenery here is often painted into the works of floating world painters.

However, these places were burned down during the Wuchen War (also known as the Ueno War) in 1868. When visiting Ueno in 1870, Bauduen, a Dutch doctor, suggested that the Japanese government could set up a park here. The government accepted Bowdun's advice and planned Japan's first park here in 1873. Bauduen is also regarded as the father of Ueno Grace Park. The facilities in the park have also increased year by year, such as the establishment of the Tokyo National Museum and Zoo in 1882, and the related artistic activities have become more active in recent years because of the positioning of the area as a "cultural forest".

If a traveler who has a little study of Japanese culture sees the word "gift" in his name, he will probably guess that it has something to do with the Japanese royal family. The 530000-hectare block of Ueno Grace Park, originally a royal dependency, was handed over to the government by Emperor Taisho in 1924, so it was called "Gift".

Basic Information and Map of Ueno Gift Park in ▋

Ueno Grace Park covers a vast area. A map is attached first to give you a preliminary idea.

Ueno Gift Park can be roughly divided into two blocks. One is the park area close to the exit of the station, including facilities such as the National Western gallery, Tokyo Metropolitan gallery, Tokyo National Museum, National Science Museum, Grace Ueno Zoo, and temple shrines such as Ueno Dongzhao Palace and Shimizu Guanyin Hall, as well as statues of Xixiang Longsheng and Hideshi Noguchi. To the west is the place where I can't bear to ride in heaven, lotus pond and swan boats.
