Female ginkgo trees use artificial pollination to promote fruiting, which often results in either more or less fruit, and too much fruit often makes ginkgo trees "tired to death". Grafting male scions on female trees of Ginkgo biloba can be pollinated naturally, so there is no need to worry about artificial pollination year after year, resulting in too many results and affecting the normal growth of Ginkgo biloba. So, how to choose a male scion?

1. Select the male scion with late flowering.

After the male flower of Ginkgo biloba is mature, the pollen sac releases a large amount of yellowish pollen, which is called flowering at this time, and the flowering period is only about two days; when the ovule of female flower is mature, the micropyle exudates the powder liquid and forms bead droplets, that is, "sexual water". At this time, it is flowering, and the flowering duration is about 1 week. Only when the pollen of the male flower falls on the "sexual water" can the female flower be fertilized and fruited. Male trees generally blossom early, the rate of meeting with female trees is low, and the rate of natural pollination is not high, so we should choose male branches that bloom later and do grafting with male branches flowering at the same time with females.

2. Select the male scion with large flowering quantity.

According to the investigation, some male trees have 1-3 male flowers in one axillary bud, while others have 5-9 male flowers in one axillary bud. Male branches with more male flowers in axillary buds should be selected as scions.

3. Choose the male scion with longer flowering time.

Male flowers generally bloom for only about two days, while some male trees have a longer flowering period, which can reach more than 4 days. Scions should be selected from male trees with longer flowering period.

4. Choose two male scions with different florescence but little difference.

In order to avoid the normal pollination of male flowers caused by continuous overcast and rain in the flowering period, two kinds of male scions with different florescence and little difference should be selected when grafting male branches on the mother tree. The flowering peak of a male branch (scion) is 2-3 days earlier than that of the female tree, and the flowering peak of another male branch (scion) is 1 day later than that of the female tree, so as to ensure the fertilization of the female flower of Ginkgo biloba.
