An Italian basil grower has chosen to replace high-pressure sodium lamps with LED, which has been found to promote plant growth while reducing energy consumption on farms.

The grower, based in Reggio, Italy's southern port, produces basil for salads, spaghetti and other dishes, and has been using high-pressure sodium lamps in its greenhouses.

To avoid typical basil disease, growers use artificial light in the greenhouse for several hours a day, which increases costs.

Using red, super red and blue LED lights in different proportions in the greenhouse can speed up the growth time of basil, shorten the harvest time by five days, and increase crop yield.

"We are worried about the proliferation of bacteria because the Peronospara fungus has been eradicated by the heat generated by HPS lighting, but we did not have any problems with LED," said Marco Boselli, the grower's manager.

"We can also observe that our basil grows better and faster because the proportion of blue light is lower, which is 5% in the LED scheme, compared with 24% in the previous HPS scheme."

Sebastian Lyschic, global project manager of Osram Optoelectronics, said: "durable, energy-efficient and durable LED technology is becoming increasingly popular and will one day replace standard horticultural lighting."
