First of all, the editor must confess that it is not suitable to grow tubers, but it is suitable to buy, such as my favorite dahlias, geraniums, crabapple flowers, sword orchids and canna, as well as tubers such as calla lilies.

PS: they usually start planting from March to April in spring. They grow as soon as they warm up, and now they blossom!

Common summer flowering tubers

1. Begonia flower

Begonia flowers (begonia) have ornamental flowers and foliage. And flowering crabapple flowers have large flowers, but also have small flower varieties.

Most of our gardens and potted plants are distinguished by roots, with underground stems and tuberous roots.

In general, the most popular large flower species in the garden is the tuberous root, which is mostly planted under the trees in the garden. Begonia can not stand the heat and drought, and it is easy to die, and the petals are easy to scorch when it is too hot, and the edges turn yellow.

Their flowers are large and beautiful. The colors range from white, pink, red to yellow and apricot, and some have different color edges or two-color flowers with different colors.

The petals are cup-shaped like roses and wavy edges. General flowers are about 6cm to 7cm, but some special varieties can be as large as 15cm in diameter. I hear there's still some fragrance.

This kind of begonia is short and suitable to be planted in shady flower beds and trees. Plant the front of the flower bed because it is short. In addition, there is also a hanging type, suitable for a kind of hanging basin.

It is best to pick the flowers immediately after the begonia flowers fade, so that new flowers can appear. And if you do not pick flowers, the stem will grow longer and longer, but there are no flowers.

2. Calla lilies

The flowers of calla lilies are very beautiful and are generally planted by the water in the tropics. It is even wild in some tropical places, but it can only be used as potted plants in warm and cold zones.

The so-called flower of calla lily is not a flower, but a Buddha's flame, most of which are white and have yellow stamens. In addition, there are purple, yellow and white with green stripes. It usually has a light fragrance, but it is still very elegant.

Like bulbs such as tulips, this underground stem contains all the nutrients of the whole plant. It is not cold-resistant at all. You can also buy young plants to transplant them in the spring.

3. Canna

Canna is a plant familiar to people in the tropics, with large leaves like a banana tree and large flowers, which are very rough in the right environment. Usually have a height of more than one meter. Among them, the higher varieties can be more than 2.5 meters higher.

Most of the leaves of canna are pure green, and some have straight lines to increase their beauty. There are also newer varieties of brown, purple, or bronzed leaves. Most of the flowers are red and yellow, and some are apricot or even white.

Canna is afraid of cold, so it must be absolutely frost-free before it can be planted on the ground. It is very drought-resistant and heat-resistant, and tends to be more organic to the soil.

If you want to keep the underground stem, you can dig up the underground stem collection after the leaves have withered in autumn.

In terms of soil, there is a lot of organic soil, compost soil, peat soil, animal manure, etc., in addition to good drainage.

Because the plant is tall and eye-catching, it can be planted behind the flower bed or in the middle of the flower bed. It is also suitable for growing alone. When several plants of the same color are planted together, the effect is better.

Canna can also be planted in a basin, but it needs a larger basin, a large drainage hole at the bottom, and very good drainage. Because three plants have to be planted in groups to look good, it is best to have a large basin and a basin deep enough. Small stones and sand are placed on the bottom layer to increase drainage.

If it is planted in a basin, it can be kept indoors in winter, so there is no need to dig out the underground stem.

Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting them in wet peat soil or wet perlite.

When the weather is warm in spring, the underground stem can be planted in a basin with a diameter of more than 25 centimeters, not too deep, as long as a layer of soil is enough. Maintain a temperature of about 16 degrees. After that, you can move outdoors when there is no frost.

4. Dahlia

Dahlias are probably the most popular among summer tuber flowers, which are usually planted in spring, but because dahlias are afraid of frost, they must be planted in the soil when there is no frost damage. It is best to wait until the soil temperature reaches 15 degrees before planting in the soil.

Dahlia belongs to the Compositae family, with flowers similar to chrysanthemums. But most flowers are bigger and more gorgeous than chrysanthemums. There are even new varieties of flowers that are very large, which means they are as big as plates.

If you plant this type, in addition to choosing large flowers, you should also remove the smaller buds before blooming, leaving only one in the middle.

Dahlias are afraid of frost, but they are also afraid of heat. When planting in too hot areas, choose a shady spot at noon. When planting in cooler places, choose more sunny areas. Do not cut when planting tubers, about 6-8 inches deep. The part with the tip of the bud is upward.

Higher varieties must stand up at the time of planting. Don't water the tubers when you first plant them, lest they rot. Show the buds before watering. And don't fertilize too quickly.

If you want to see the flowers earlier, you can plant the tubers indoors a month earlier and transplant them to the flower bed when the weather is warm.

Fertilizer should be low nitrogen fertilizer, preferably 5-10-10 ratio. It was only after seeing the sprouts that fertilizer was used. About 3-4 Monday will be fine.

When the flowers are withered and picked, new flowers will appear more quickly.

In the area above District 8, dahlias can spend the winter in the fields. As long as the topsoil is covered with a layer of mulch in winter, other places will be dug up at the end of autumn.

5. Geranium

It generally refers to the annual large-flowered plant in the flower bed, which is said to be a large flower, but it is actually a ball of small flowers gathered into a bouquet. Bright red and pink are the most eye-catching colors. But there are also white, apricot, and variegated colors.

Geraniums need sunlight to bloom, especially large flowers, which need at least six hours of light a day. At the same time, the water can not be cut off, because the root is shallow, if it does not rain for a few days, it should be watered. If you are in the dry and hot zone, you can have a little shade, and you should pay more attention to regular watering.

The most important thing to plant geraniums is to pick flowers. When the flower fades, pick the flower head and cut it off, otherwise the plant will begin to bear fruit and stop blooming.

6. Sword orchid

Sword orchid is also a tropical flower with underground stems, but its underground stems are not bulbs (like garlic) or ginger, but like persimmons or garlic without cloves.

When planting in the cold zone, the underground stems will be dug up and collected every autumn when the leaves are withered, and will be planted again next year. Or buy a new one.

Sword orchid is a very popular flower in China, because the flowers keep blooming from the bottom to the top. And because the flowers bloom one after another, they can also last for a long time.

Sword orchid is very afraid of frost, only above 5 degrees can be planted through the winter, so it should be planted after there is no danger of frost, and the cold degree is about the same as that of tomatoes.

Most people plant sword orchids in order to arrange flowers, because in the ground, because the plants are slender, they often have to set up pillars, otherwise a rain may be skewed.

If you want to cut the vase, you can cut it at the bottom of the flower as soon as it blooms, so that it can bloom for a long time.

Planting sword orchid in overheated areas and covering the ground with organic soil as fertilizer can keep blooming for a long time. In the 7-8 area, soil or straw should also be covered in winter to prevent the ground from being too cold and freezing the underground stem.

After the flowers fade, it is best to pick the flowers so as not to bear seeds and take up nutrients. When all the flowers are gone, cut off the stem and retain the leaves for photosynthesis, so that the underground stem can continue to absorb nutrients and will continue to blossom next year. It doesn't matter unless you don't want to keep the underground stem. (tulips and daffodils are also treated the same way.)

Maintenance of tuber plants in summer

Tubers can be saved by you, and most florists go to the florist to buy new ones.

This kind of summer flowering tubers can be put away in autumn, stored in the shade of the basement, or hidden in the sand of the upper and lower 15 rivers.

1. Selection of basin soil

You can take it out from March to April, shake off the soil a little, and plant it in a clean basin. You must use newly bought or newly prepared potted soil.

Do not use the old soil used in other potted plants to avoid mold or insect pests.

2. Exception handling

Before planting, you can check whether the tuber is healthy and if there is any moldy part. If so, it can be cut off with a sterilized knife. When planting, the sprouting eye should face up and the rooting place should be down. First put more than an inch of soil in the basin, then put on the tuber, and then cover it with more than 3 centimeters of soil.

3. Points for attention

You can plant one tuber in a small pot, or several in a large basin. Pay attention to the drainage hole of the basin must be large enough, so as not to cause rotting roots caused by stagnant water in the basin soil.

Put it in a window with light after sprouting. When the weather is so warm that there will be no frost at night, it can be transplanted to the flower bed.

4. Non-transplanting tubers

Among them, sword orchid is not suitable for planting in the pot and then transplanting, it is best to wait for the spring to plant directly in the flower bed.

This kind of tuber plants like warm weather and should be planted in sunny flower beds. Because if you want annual plants to bloom all the time, you can't cut off water and fertilize regularly.
