Jialan, the national flower of the Republic of Zimbabwe
A climbing plant of the order Liliales, family Liliaceae, the national flower of Zimbabwe; its petals are characteristically retroverted and undulate. Hi warm, humid climate and rich in organic matter, drainage, good ventilation, strong water retention fertile soil, in the dense forest and wet grass grow well. Climbing plants; rhizomes massive, fleshy, often divergent, ca. 1 cm thick. Stems 2-3 m or longer. Leaves usually alternate, sometimes opposite, lanceolate, 7-13 cm long, apex caudate and extending into very long tendrils (except lowermost leaves), base shortly stalked. Flowers beautiful, solitary in or near upper leaf axils, sometimes subcorymbose at ends of branches; pedicels up to 10-15 cm long; tepals strip-lanceolate, 4.5-5 cm long, ca. 8 mm wide, reflexed, raised by drooping flowers, base narrowed and somewhat stipitate, margin corrugated, upper part bright red, lower part yellow, persistent; filaments 3-4 cm long, anthers strip-shaped, ca. 1 cm long; Style filiform, subequal to filaments, segments ca. 6-7 mm.
