After 30 years, a new rice variety "Taichung Indica No. 197" was finally bred. Taichung Agricultural Reform Farm yesterday (24) published a new variety of Laimi, which has good disease resistance and can shorten the storage time to make pure rice vermicelli, etc., with good results. At the same time, the agricultural reform farm announced a new variety of radish "Taichung 2", which is suitable for summer planting, has good heat tolerance and low incidence of disease, and is suitable for planting in the central and southern flatlands. It can fill the gap in Taiwan's annual radish production in April and October, and is expected to reduce its dependence on Chinese radish in summer.

The new rice variety ─ Taichung Indica 197 can shorten the storage period.

In order to revive the rice culture, the Taichung Agricultural Reform Farm cultivated a new variety in the Laimi ─ Taichung Indica 1977.Farm director Lin Hsueh-shih said that this is the last time a new variety has been bred in Taiwan after a gap of 30 years. Taichung Indica 197 has good environmental tolerance, can resist rice fever, chimera leaf blight, spot planthopper and white-backed planthopper and other insect pests, and the rice plant is not easy to lodge and does not affect the yield and quality.

In addition, "Taichung Indica 197" has a high rate of complete rice and good quality, which is especially suitable for processing into pure rice products, such as pure rice vermicelli. Lin Hsueh-shih further said that rice grains usually have to be kept for more than a year, and only after the rice grains are aging can they be easily formed and suitable for processing into foods such as salty rice pudding, but the storage time of "Taichung Indica 1970" is at least three months shorter than that of ordinary rice seeds. convenient operators carry out processing procedures in a relatively short period of time.
