Salvia miltiorrhiza

This wonderful peppermint relative is often displayed in the form of flowers abroad, but in our country we often know that it is a single traditional Chinese medicine. Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, which contains tanshinone, is a strong dysmenorrhea agent, which has the effects of removing blood stasis, promoting blood circulation, regulating menstruation and so on.

Salvia miltiorrhiza (scientific name: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge): dicotyledonous perennial erect herbs of the genus Salvia, having fleshy roots, crimson outside, white inside, fleshy, leaves often odd-pinnate, terminal or axillary racemes; bracts lanceolate, calyx campanulate, purplish blue, style protruding, nutlets black, oval, flowering from April to August, fruit after anthesis.

Salvia miltiorrhiza can survive under quite harsh conditions, but it does not tolerate moisture, so be sure to plant them in well-drained soil. Once Salvia miltiorrhiza survives, they can withstand a long drought. Usually, supplementary watering is needed only in a hot summer when there is no rain for a long time. Salvia miltiorrhiza likes light, and the flowering period is longer when the light is sufficient.

When planting your salvia miltiorrhiza, leave enough space for it to grow and begin to spread. After the initial flowering, if the plant becomes too large, it can be halved by about half to promote the second round of flowering. Salvia miltiorrhiza can also be divided all the year round to produce more new plants. This is best done in the early spring of plant emergence-as long as you are careful not to damage the growth of new buds.

Because Salvia miltiorrhiza is a diverse plant family, there is a lot of room for plant improvement. At present, efforts are being made to improve cold resistance in winter, make plants more compact, and improve disease resistance. With these improvements, researchers are studying the two-color form of perennial Salvia miltiorrhiza.
