The natural conditions of Lingnan bonsai

Lingnan is generally distributed in the eastern part of Guangxi to the eastern part of Guangdong and at the junction of Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. In the past, the Nanling Mountains were like a natural barrier, hindering the traffic and economic links between Lingnan and the Central Plains, making the economy and culture of Lingnan far inferior to that of the Central Plains, and was called "barbarian land" by northerners. Lingnan area has been gradually developed since Zhang Jiuling, prime minister of the Tang Dynasty, dug the ancient Meiguan Road in Dagengling. The Geographic Chronicles of Jin Shu refers to Nanhai, Guilin and Xiang counties established in Qin Dynasty as "Lingnan three counties", which defines the regional scope of Lingnan.

Lingnan is bordered by Wuling to the north, the South China Sea to the south, Yungui to the west and Fujian to the east, covering most of present Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi and northern Vietnam. Northern Vietnam was not separated until after the Song Dynasty. Wuling does not specifically refer to the names of the five ridges, but also includes the five passageways through Nanling. Lingnan is also known as the outside of the range, the collar table, this is in terms of different geographical location, from the Central Plains region, known as outside the ridge from the Pearl River Delta, also known as the ridge table.

In Lingnan region, most of them are subtropical monsoon climate, where the amount of solar radiation is more, the sunlight is exposed for a long time, and the wind direction changes alternately with seasons, because the Tropic of Cancer crosses the central part of Lingnan region, and the main climate is high temperature and rainy. It is under such climatic conditions that the vegetation in Lingnan region will grow luxuriantly, evergreen all the seasons, flowers contending for beauty, various fruits all the year round, and plant resources are very rich.

As a bonsai art, it is precisely the need for such easy-to-sprout and fast-growing tree species, that is, highly germinating tree species as provenances. Jiuli incense, Fujian tea, Finch, elm, Acacia, banyan and other tree species have gradually become the preferred tree materials for Lingnan bonsai art. and this climatic feature also provides preparation conditions for the unique creative technique of Lingnan tree stump bonsai art of "storing trunk and cutting branches". In addition, Lingnan is also rich in Yingde stone, sand stone, Reed stone, pumice, Haimu coral stone, stalactite and other ornamental stone, which has become a good material for Lingnan landscape bonsai.
