Everyone has heard the famous "Acacia" by Wang Wei, a poet of the Tang Dynasty: "the glittering red beans are produced in Lingnan, and the leaves should grow in spring. May you pick more of it for decoration and wear, for this thing can best forgive your feelings. " This poem gives Hongdou a special meaning, which represents love and lovesickness. Many people think that the red beans mentioned in the poem are the red beans we often eat in our lives, but in fact, this truth remains to be verified. Because in the south, there are three kinds of beans called red beans, namely red beans, sea red beans and Acacia. Among them, only red beans can be eaten, the other two can not be eaten, and Acacia also contains highly toxic.

Acacia is mainly produced in the tropics and is common in Guangdong, Guangdong and Yunnan. Its flowering and fruiting period is similar to that of red beans, so it is easy to be mistaken for red beans, but if you identify them carefully, you will find that they are very different. 1/3 of Acacia's fruit is black, so farmers also call it "mandarin duck bean", "blackhead chicken", "Guiyanzi" and other names. For local farmers, this is a highly poisonous plant passed on by word of mouth, and they generally do not touch it.

Acacia is poisonous because it contains a toxic substance called Acacia bean toxin protein, which can be fatal with only 3 micrograms, while an Acacia seed contains more than 3 micrograms of toxin, so it is more dangerous to eat half of it. But don't worry too much, because the seed shell of Acacia is so hard that touching won't cause poisoning unless you chew it up and swallow it. This toxin is also very harmful to animals, especially horses, which are very sensitive to this toxin and can be poisoned as little as 15 grams. So don't eat it like a red bean when you see it, and don't feed it to the animals.

But Acacia is not useless, because its bright color, red and black color is very special, often processed into beaded ornaments, loved by people. However, these highly toxic substances are specially processed and are not recommended to be processed by themselves, because it is said that some workers in Africa accidentally punctured their fingers when they were processing Acacia, resulting in poisoning. However, this kind of handicraft is also very rare. I remember seeing someone sell it when I was a child, but I haven't seen it anymore.

Acacia is one of the five most poisonous plants in the world, ranking second, followed by castor bean. They are quite common in the countryside. Please don't take them off when you see them.
