Some bonsai trees, especially deciduous trees, are the most beautiful when the new leaves are just growing, which is the best viewing time. But the best viewing period is only once a year under natural conditions. In order to improve the ornamental ability, the leaves of the plant can be picked in summer or early autumn to sprout new leaves with small, dense and brightly colored leaves.

The new leaves of some tree species are beautiful red or with redness, such as pomegranate, triangular maple, maple and so on. In addition, some miscellaneous tree species, such as bauhinia, elm, sparrow plum, lobular privet, etc., have strong germination ability. After picking leaves, the new leaves are small and thick, and are more ornamental. This kind of tree species can be picked three times a year, and the best viewing period can be increased from once to three times.

The time of picking leaves is usually in the growing season from June to September. Many places in our country have the habit of holding bonsai exhibitions before and after the National Day. The old leaves can be removed 20 to 30 days in advance, the vigorous plants can remove all the leaves at once, and the weak plants can be divided into 2 to 3 times. After picking leaves, give sufficient light, and apply a mature organic liquid fertilizer, and then strengthen the management of water and fertilizer, apply mature thin liquid fertilizer once a week, often spray water on the branches, and soon there will be tender and lovely new leaves to grow, giving people a fresh and pleasant, enterprising feeling.

For Tamarix bonsai, if you participate in the exhibition before and after the National Day, you can pick leaves around July 15 (not more than July 20). If the exhibition time is advanced or postponed, the leaf picking time should be adjusted accordingly. Picking leaves can be carried out twice, it is best not to pick the leaves at once, so that the leaves can be used as a "breathing window" of plants, so as not to "suffocate" the bonsai, and make nutrients through photosynthesis, which is conducive to the germination of new leaves. After the new leaves germinate, all the remaining leaves are removed. After picking leaves, water and fertilizer should keep up, apply mature thin liquid fertilizer every 3 to 5 days, and often spray water to the plants to increase air humidity, make the new leaves plump and strong, the color green. Pay attention to the weather change after picking leaves. When the highest temperature is lower than 18 ℃, the stump should be moved to a place not in the open air at night. If the bonsai is too big to move, you can build a shed to cover it, so as to prevent the dew from yellowing and knocking down the new leaves.

The bonsai after picking leaves can be reshaped about a week before the exhibition, remove some branches and leaves that affect the shape of the tree, remove the wire on the stereotyped branches, and place the furnishings as needed to make them participate in the exhibition in a perfect posture.
