Dahlia, the national flower of Mexico

Head large, long pedunculate, often pendulous, 6-12 cm wide. Involucral bracts about 5 in outer layer, ovate-elliptic, leafy, inner membranous, elliptic-lanceolate. Ligulate flowers 1-layered, white, red, or purple, often ovate, apex inconspicuously 3-toothed, or entire; tubular flowers yellow, sometimes all ligulate in cultivated species.

Achene oblong, 9-12 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, black, flattened, with 2 inconspicuous teeth. The florescence is from June to December and the fruiting period is from September to October.
