Orchid, one of the top ten traditional flowers in China, is also a famous flower in the world. it is deeply loved by people for its faint fragrance or beautiful beauty. it has become an important species of modern urban greening and family environment beautification. it is even the most economically valuable "green stock" at present.

However, for urban residents with high-rise buildings, like other flowers and plants, it is not easy to grow orchids. The higher the floor is, the worse the micro-domain environment is, and the less likely it is to grow well. The emergence of closed balconies slows down this problem, which provides a promising way to popularize urban orchids.

The closed balcony mentioned by the author here refers to the balcony surrounded by aluminum alloy, steel and wooden frame glass windows. it has some similar characteristics of glass house greenhouse in horticulture, compared with the open balcony. it has the characteristics of low light intensity, small temperature difference, less rain and wind interference, low humidity, large temperature difference between the upper and lower parts of the balcony, small variation of the floor and easy to be controlled by manual control. Now it is described in terms of the three or four floors facing the southeast.

1. Light. The lighting time is basically the same as that of the open balcony, but in terms of light quality, because ultraviolet light cannot penetrate the glass, when all windows are closed, the ultraviolet radiation is equal to zero; different glass materials and the use of curtains can affect the light intensity of 20%. According to the author's practice results, generally shading in late spring and early autumn, the rest of the time is not covered, the orchid growth effect is very good.

2. Temperature. With the adjustment of light, compared with the open balcony, the temperature changes obviously. When the temperature reaches-6 ℃ in winter, the night temperature of the enclosed balcony reaches about 2 degrees; when the daytime temperature reaches 39 degrees in summer, the temperature of the balcony behind the curtain is 34 ℃, while the temperature of the open balcony can reach 43 ℃. But when the window is not open, the temperature in the first half of the night can be higher than 4Mel 5 degrees. As far as the upper and lower floors of the balcony are concerned, the closer to the top, the higher the temperature.

3. Humidity. Due to man-made action and small air flow, the humidity of the enclosed balcony is generally about 700.90%. It reaches more than 90% in rainy days or after spraying water for a period of time, but it is lower in rainy days than in rainy days. The law of change throughout the year and the basic law of nature, but the range of change is small, closer to the physiological requirements of orchids like to be moist. Contrary to the temperature, the humidity of the upper and lower layers of the balcony is small at the top and large at the bottom. The transpiration rate of the same basin soil in the middle of the balcony is 3 times that of the balcony floor. Therefore, this factor should be fully taken into account when placing orchid pots.

4. The disadvantages of rain, wind, Rain Water and wind volume to artificially cultivated orchids are mainly manifested in their excess. There is a saying that "winter is not wet", but according to our practice of growing orchids, "plum (season) is not stained" is even more important, because a large number of Rain Water in plum season can bring about the reproduction of diseases and insect pests and the decay of new plants; wind (air) is an important factor in raising orchids. "Ling Hai Lan Yan" said: "face ventilation is the first meaning of orchid cultivation." But it refers to the breeze and keeping the air smooth. Our monsoon prevails, especially living in high-rise buildings with more than four stories, it is difficult for plants to grow safely on the open balcony. The closed balcony can adjust the required wind and rainfall at will through the closing and opening of the window to create good conditions for orchid growth without excessive invasion.
