Adiantum, Adiantum family, perennial herbs, 0.1-0.6 m tall. Because of its slender stems and color like iron wire, it is named Adiantum. Adiantum is also an indicator of calcareous soil. Due to its fear of dryness and strong light, it must be placed in a place where there is no direct sunlight.

Widely distributed in Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei and other places, often born in the limestone beside the stream or limestone cave bottom and drip rock wall, for calcareous soil indicator plants, elevation 100-2800 meters.

Common species of leaves are:

Adiantum flabellulare: leaves fan to irregularly broadly ovate, palmate to bifurcate; central pinna largest, pinna with short stalk.

Adiantum flagellum: also known as Adiantum setifolium, leaves linear lanceolate, about 10~25 cm long, often extended into whiplash at the top, rooted on the ground. Leaf blade oblong, unpinnate or bipartite lacerate, upper margin and outer margin often parted into narrow lobes, lower margin straight and entire.

Adiantum cuneifolium: leaves wide triangular, 2~4 pinnate division, lobes rhombic or oblong.

Variant:

Adiantum striata is distinguished from the original form mainly by the deep splitting of the tip of the final pinnule into some strip-shaped lobes.

Medicinal value:

Whole grass (bristle grass): light, bitter, cool. Clearing away heat and toxic materials, removing dampness and detumescence, diuresis and relieving stranguria. For dysentery, scrofula, cough due to lung heat, hepatitis, strangulation, snake bite, traumatic injury.

Horticultural value:

Shade-loving, adaptable, easy to cultivate, suitable for indoor perennial potted viewing. Small potted plants can be placed on the desk, tea table; larger potted plants can be used to decorate the windowsill, aisle or living room of the shady room. Adiantum leaves are also good materials for cutting leaves and dried flowers.
