Cultivation containers and potted substrates of garlic orchid
The root system of Cymbidium is relatively shallow, and the root system completed its life history in the same year. It grows in spring and dries up and dies in autumn and winter, which is different from common orchids. Therefore, it is best to cultivate in a shallow basin, with a height of about 10 cm and a diameter of 20-30 cm. The bottom of the basin requires good drainage and ventilation, and needs to have large and most drainage holes. If you plant in a plastic pot, you must drill another drainage hole in the bottom of the basin. A basin with a diameter of 25 cm must have 20 drainage holes with a diameter of about 6 mm at the bottom. You can also choose small sieve-shaped square or round plastic baskets that are common in the market. The drainage holes at the bottom of the basin can reduce or save the pot substrate or the lower part of the pot soil to fill broken pots or broken bricks. In order to prevent infection and diseases, used flowerpots must be cleaned, sterilized and then used.
The substrate for potted plants should be loose, permeable and well ventilated, and the water retention capacity should be strong. Therefore, the general garden soil and the commonly used pot soil are not suitable for planting garlic orchid. The cultivation substrate of epiphytic or semi-epiphytic orchid can be used as pot material, and there are many kinds of potted substrates, such as 6 pieces of bark for planting epiphytic orchids (less than 5 mm, sieving dust), 1 part of coarse-grained perlite, 1 part of moss with 5 mm long and 1 part of crushed peat. When potted, the lower 2 / 3 of the pot body is filled with the thicker particles mentioned above, and the finer ones are filled on top. Fill the periphery of the newborn pseudobulb with small pieces of bark and shorter moss.
Peat soil and rotten leaf soil with high humus and fiber content can also be used as pot culture medium by adding bark block of 1 stroke 2 (diameter less than 5 mm) or perlite with some coarse particles. In addition, the pot substrate made of Taxel plus broken bricks and charcoal blocks (3Mel 5mm in diameter) is also better. The author simply used moss to pot Dichondra, and achieved very satisfactory results. Adding a small amount of coarse sand to the above pot substrate is good for stabilizing the planting of Cymbidium mongolica plants in the pot, and will not stagger because the cultivation substrate is too light and loose. Of course, too much sand or brick fragments will also make the matrix too dense, affecting the growth and development of the root system. Adding a small amount of rotten mountain hair law or tree leaves to the pot substrate, or adding some dried cow dung is beneficial to the cultivation of garlic orchid.
In the Yangtze River basin, especially in the vast areas of the provinces and regions in Younan region, we can choose a suitable place to introduce Cymbidium. A special nursery can be set up for large-scale productive cultivation in better woodland. It can also be planted in other garden plants. Open-field cultivation (not potted in the greenhouse) should choose under the forest or semi-shade where the soil is loose, contains a lot of humus and has good drainage. It requires good ventilation and high air humidity in spring, summer and autumn. If the soil is too sticky or barren, change the soil or add some humus, broken bark, sawdust or peat to the garden soil. The lower layer of the soil can be filled with some granular drainage, such as broken cinder, broken bricks and so on. (Lu Sicong)
