Eichhornia

Eichhornia crassipes is a floating herb belonging to the genus Eichhornia of the family Eichhornia.

Origin of Eichhornia crassipes

Water hyacinth originated in Brazil, due to biological natural enemy control, only an ornamental population scattered in the water, in 1844 in the United States exposition was referred to as "beautify the world's lavender corolla." Since then, the plant has been cultivated as an ornamental plant.

Widely distributed in the Yangtze River, Yellow River basin and southern China provinces. It grows in ponds, ditches and rice fields at altitudes of 200-1500 m, and is also widely grown in tropical Asia.

Morphological Characteristics of Eichhornia crassipes

Floating herbs, 30-60 cm tall. Fibrous roots developed, brown black, up to 30 cm. Stems very short, with long stolons, stolons pale green or purplish, separate from the mother plant and grow into new plants.

The petals of Eichhornia crassipes are purple-blue, the corolla is slightly symmetrical on both sides, pale purple-red on all sides, blue in the middle, a yellow circular spot in the center of the blue, and the tepals are united into a tube at the base.

The flowering period of Eichhornia crassipes is from July to October, and the fruiting period is from August to November.
