Bayberry is an evergreen tree, up to 15 m high, trunk diameter up to 60 cm; branches and buds glabrous, young branches with shield-shaped glands; leaf blade leathery, surface glabrous, leaf age about 2 years, leaf tip acuminate or acute, sparsely sharply serrate above middle of leaf margin, entire below middle, leaf base cuneate; sparse golden glands on veins.

Red bayberry flowers are dioecious, male flowers clustered in leaf axils, cylindrical, about 1 × 3 cm long; male flowers have 2-4 ovate bracteoles and 4-6 stamens; male anthers are dark red oval; red bayberry fruit is dark red or purplish red globose, the pericarp surface is papillary protruding, exocarp is succulent, sour and sweet; bayberry blossoms in April and the fruit matures from June to July.
