Geographical distribution of Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Metasequoia glyptostroboides can be cultivated in the south of Beijing and grows well at the junction of Hubei, Chongqing and Hunan provinces. The vertical distribution is generally 750-1500 meters above sea level.

Morphological characteristics of Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Metasequoia glyptostroboides is a deciduous tree with up to 35 meters in height and 2.5 meters in diameter. The leaf is linear, alternately opposite, pinnately compound, the upper surface of the leaf is light green, the lower surface is lighter, and there are two 4-8 yellowish stomatal bands along the midrib. The bark of Metasequoia glyptostroboides is grayish brown, the young bark will split into thin pieces and fall off, and the mature bark will split and grow into strips; Metasequoia glyptostroboides are monoecious. Cones pendulous, subglobose, slightly 4-angled, long stalked; seed scales woody, peltate, seeds flattened, narrowly winged around. The florescence of Metasequoia glyptostroboides is in late February and the cones mature in November.

Metasequoia glyptostroboides growing environment

Metasequoia glyptostroboides likes warm and humid climatic conditions, and most of them are born in places with gentle terrain, deep soil, humid or slightly stagnant water, and acid mountain yellow soil, purple soil or alluvial soil are suitable for their growth. the optimum growth temperature of Metasequoia glyptostroboides is about 18 ℃, cool in summer and snow without severe cold in winter. Metasequoia glyptostroboides likes light, is not tolerant to barren and drought, its growth rate is often controlled by soil moisture, transplanting is easy to survive, the plant grows slowly in places with long-term stagnant water, and the base of the trunk is usually inflated and longitudinally angled.
