Perilla is an annual herb of Labiatae. Aliases are cinnamon, white, red, red, black, white perilla, blue perilla, hemp, water cohosh and so on.

Morphological characteristics of Perilla frutescens

Perilla is an annual erect herb with a green or purple stem of 0.3ft 2m in height, with a blunt tetrahedral shape and long villi on the stem.

The leaf blade is broadly ovate or orbicular, 7 ~ 13 cm long and 4.5 ~ 10 cm wide, the front end of the leaf is mucronate or protruding, the base is rounded or broadly cuneate, the margin is coarsely serrate, the leaf blade is green or purple in color, or only purple below, with sparse villi above and Adnate villi below.

Verticillate inflorescences 2-flowered, forming terminal and axillary racemes 1.5-15 cm long, densely villous, oblique to one side; bracts broadly ovoid or suborbicular, ca. 4 mm long and wide, apex mucronate, outer reddish brown glandular dots, glabrous, margin membranous; pedicels 1.5 mm long, densely pilose.

Nutlets are globose, grayish brown, about 1.5 mm in diameter, with reticulate lines, perilla florescence in August-November, fruiting in August-December.

Growth characteristics of Perilla frutescens

Perilla has strong growth adaptability and low requirements for the environment. It generally grows on well-drained, fertile sandy soil, loam, clay soil, before and after the house, and at the edge of the gully.
