General orchids like warm winter and cool summer temperature conditions, most of our country is in the temperate zone, subtropical zone, are suitable for orchid growth. There are many orchids in all parts of the country except Northeast and Northwest. In most parts of Northeast, Northwest and North China, the winter is too cold to be suitable for orchid cultivation outdoors. Generally speaking, orchids should be moved indoors in winter and shade sheds should be set up in summer to prevent the scorching sun.

The northernmost orchid plants in China are Cymbidium and Cymbidium. In their distribution line, there are frosts or short-term snow in winter, and the temperature is higher in summer. However, orchids grow mostly in places with trees, mostly in mixed forests or bamboo forests of broad-leaved and coniferous forests, shielding both the hot sun in summer and the cold wind in winter. In snow-covered areas, snow plays a protective role, and the ground temperature under snow is generally not below 0 ℃.

In Beijing, orchids need to be moved indoors or in greenhouses for half a year from late October or early November to late April of the following year. In winter in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, orchids are also cultivated indoors. In Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, Taiwan and other regions, orchids (local orchids) do not need to spend the winter indoors, while in some areas of Guizhou, Hunan and Sichuan, they still need to be properly protected in winter. Compared with the growing areas of orchids, the sites where orchids grow are colder in winter and hotter in summer; and the worldwide climate anomaly is also unpredictable; in addition, orchids generally have poor stress resistance and weak resistance under artificial cultivation conditions. Therefore, in all parts of our country, the cultivation of orchids should take protective measures against cold in winter. (song Shi)
