Winter management and protection of orchids
In winter, strengthening the management of orchids is the key to the growth and flowering of orchids in the coming year. The experience of the ancients in raising orchids was "three-point planting and seven-point management". To manage orchids well in winter, different management methods should be adopted according to different varieties of orchids. According to my years of experience in orchid cultivation, it is particularly important to strengthen the management and protection of moisture, fertilizer, temperature and ventilation in order to make orchids survive the winter safely.
Moisture: to grasp the "summer and autumn should not be dry, winter and spring should not be wet" principle. This is the valuable experience that our predecessors summed up for us to raise orchids. Winter orchids enter the dormant period, no longer grow, can be watered once a week. (except spring, cold, ink orchid) it is better to use natural water and snow-melting water, and can not be poured directly with tap water. (that is, if you use tap water, use an accumulator for 24 hours before using it.) When watering, pour it around the flowerpot to make it gradually penetrate into the root of the flower, and avoid pouring it into the leaf.
Fertilizer: orchids have no whisker roots, and there is symbiosis of root fungi in fleshy roots. Generally speaking, if the orchid turns the pot and changes the soil every year, and the soil contains enough nutrients, there is no need to apply fertilizer. Even if the pots changed for 2 to 3 years, they no longer grow during the winter dormant period, there is no need to apply fertilizer, if fertilized in winter, it will make the root black and even rot (except in spring and Mulan during the growing period).
Temperature: into winter, outdoor orchids should be moved indoors or closed balconies. Orchids should often be moved outside (preferably around noon), so that they absorb fresh air, receive sunlight, orchids placed in a closed balcony, but also often open windows to allow ventilation, move back in the evening to prevent the invasion of air-conditioning at night.
