Yinchuan, 29 Jul (Xinhua) Qian Keming, chief economist of the Ministry of Agriculture, recently revealed at the sixth China (Ningxia) Horticultural Expo that the sown area of alpine vegetables in China has reached 22 million mu, which has become an important driving force for the vast number of poor people in mountainous areas to shake off poverty and become rich.

It is understood that the main production bases of alpine cold vegetables in China are located in Wuling Mountain area, Qinba Mountain area, Dabie Mountain area, Liupan Mountain area and Bashang area of Hebei Province, involving more than 120 high-altitude cities and counties in more than 10 provinces and cities.

"for example, remote mountainous areas such as Bijie in Guizhou, Taibai in Shaanxi, and Guyuan in Ningxia are not only areas with special difficulties, but also old revolutionary base areas in our country. Scientifically promoting the development of vegetable industry on the plateau in these areas is of great significance to the local poverty alleviation work." Qian Keming said.

Guyuan, Ningxia has been rated as "the hometown of cold vegetables in China" in July this year. The total planting area of cold vegetables has reached 587000 mu, all through the identification of the origin of pollution-free agricultural products, with a total annual output of 2 million tons, of which 70% are exported to some large and medium-sized cities in China and Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

In Yaomo Village, Pengbao Town, Yuanzhou District, Guyuan City, Ruifeng vegetable production and Marketing Farmers' Professional Cooperative is a member of the army of growing alpine vegetables. Yao Xuan, president of the cooperative, said: "there are more than 240 farmers growing alpine cold vegetables in the village, and my cooperative alone has 154 cooperative farmers. Now our products have been exported to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai, and we plan to expand our scale and enter the Hong Kong market. "

Not only in Guyuan, Ningxia, but also in recent years, many places in China have given positive support to the development of cold vegetables on the plateau. According to Qian Keming, alpine vegetables organically combine "pollution-free" with "out-of-season" with excellent quality and good market benefits.At present, the sown area of alpine vegetables across the country has grown to 22 million mu, with an output value of more than 50 billion yuan. it has become a new way for people in mountain areas to increase their income and become rich.
