The website of the Ministry of Civil Affairs recently announced the national disaster situation in July 2014, which was released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National disaster reduction Office. Data show that a total of 80.125 million people were affected by various natural disasters in July, with 302 deaths, 64 missing, 2.045 million emergency resettlement and 781000 people in need of emergency living assistance.

It has been verified that in July, China's natural disasters were mainly typhoons, floods and droughts, and disasters such as wind and hail, earthquakes, mountain collapses, landslides, debris flows, forest and grassland fires and storm surges also occurred to varying degrees. Various natural disasters also caused 107000 houses to collapse and 911000 to varying degrees of damage; crops affected an area of 8652.8 thousand hectares, of which 943.1 hectares were lost; and direct economic losses totaled 100.66 billion yuan.

The analysis shows that the natural disasters in July show four characteristics: the overall disaster is relatively light, and the disasters are relatively concentrated in some areas; the super typhoon, rarely seen in history, has seriously affected South China's Yunnan Province; extreme precipitation events occur frequently, and the losses of floods, winds and hail are serious; the summer drought in Huanghuai and other places in North China has an impact on people's lives and autumn grain production.

Compared with the same period in the past decade, except for the increase in direct economic losses, the other loss indicators decreased in July. Among them, the number of collapsed houses decreased by more than 70%, the number of people killed and missing due to the disaster decreased by 40%, and the number of people for emergency resettlement decreased by more than 30%.

In July, a total of two typhoons landed in China, and the number of landings was the same as that of the whole year, but the disaster was obviously more serious, the direct economic loss ranked first in the same period of nearly a decade, and the number of dead and missing persons, the area of crop failure and the number of damaged houses were second only to the same period in 2006.

In addition, since the beginning of summer, there has been less precipitation in the northwest, North China, Huang-Huai, the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River and parts of southwest China, and more than 20% less rainfall in most of Huang-Huai, the eastern part of North China, central and southern Shaanxi, and eastern Gansu, of which Henan is 60% less than that in the same period of the year, the least since 1961. In July, high temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius occurred in parts of North China and Huang-Huai for many days in a row, and extreme high temperature events occurred in many places. Affected by high temperature and little rain, 13 provinces (autonomous regions), including Inner Mongolia, Henan, Hubei and Ningxia, suffered from drought.
