Last Updated: 2024/11/05, A few days ago, led by the International Rape Sequencing Consortium, the genome sequencing of Brassica napus was completed for the first time. This is the first time in the world that the complex genome of a traditional polyploid crop has been completely sequenced and assembled, and its system comparison with its parent species has been completed.

A few days ago, the genome sequencing of Brassica napus was completed for the first time led by the International rapeseed sequencing Alliance, which was the first time in the world to complete sequencing and assembly of the complex genomes of traditional polyploid crops, and completed its systematic comparison and evolutionary analysis with its parents. The Oil crop Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences is the main participating force in this work. The breakthrough research was published in the top international journal Science (Science) on August 22nd.

Brassica napus (Brassica napus L.) is the main oil crop in China. It has been found that the genome of Brassica napus contains at least more than 100,000 protein coding genes, which is the largest number of genes among the sequenced plant species. By comparing the genomes of Brassica oleracea and Chinese cabbage, it is found that the outstanding feature of the evolution of this genome is the extensive replacement of genes or DNA sequences between the two subgenomes (An and C). The revelation of this law has important theoretical value for the study of polyploid inheritance and evolution.

Liu Shengyi, one of the technical leaders of the project and a researcher at the Oil crop Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that the next step will focus on exploring the coordinated evolution of the polyploid from a genomic point of view, its impact on the formation of traits, and the mechanism of polyploid dominance formation.
