Reduction of cotton area in the whole country

Our reporter Qiao Jinliang learned from the Ministry of Agriculture: this year's cotton planting area is expected to drop 8.7% compared with last year, and due to drought, high temperature and other meteorological disasters in some cotton areas in the early stage, cotton production for the whole year is expected to decrease compared with the previous year.

The decrease in cotton area across the country is mainly due to a large decline in cotton area in the mainland, with the cotton area in the Yangtze River Basin falling by 12.1% and the Yellow River Basin by 14.5%, showing the characteristics of "a large decrease in the area of cotton counties and a large decrease in the area of large farmers." According to the agricultural department of the inland cotton area, the spring sowing area of cotton in Hebei is 7.23 million mu, down 16.4% from the same period last year. Jiangsu's cotton area is likely to fall below 2 million mu for the first time, down about 20% from last year.

According to Pan Xiufen, a senior agronomist at the Cotton Technology extension Station of the Cangzhou Agricultural Bureau, the cotton planting area of Cangzhou last year was 1.6 million mu, and the actual cotton planting area this year is expected to be up to 1 million mu. Responsible persons of the agricultural departments of Jiangsu and other five provinces also believe that due to the relatively low efficiency of cotton and the cancellation of the temporary storage policy, the cotton area in the mainland may continue to decline in the future. Experts suggest that textile enterprises should arrange the purchase and replenishment of cotton raw materials in time according to the production progress.
