Last Updated: 2024/11/24, There are two pruning periods for gardenia, one is between May and July, and the other is around December. The pruning methods are also different in different periods. From May to July, mainly deal with luxuriant branches and malnourished branches, cut off unnecessary branches, so that other branches can get enough nutrients. In December, there are mainly three ways: truncation, thinning and retraction, so shearing can help adjust the balance of the plant and make it grow better.

1. Pruning time

Summer is the flourishing period of its growth, so it is easy to cause the phenomenon of overgrowth, so it is necessary to prune it properly, and after flowering, when the gardenia is about to enter the dormant period, it also needs to be pruned. So there are two pruning periods for gardenia: one is between May and July in summer, and the other is pruning around December when it is about to pass the winter.

2. Growth period

The period from budding to the time before the new branch stops growing is not a lot of work, mainly light cutting, which can prevent the new branch from growing too fast. We can also cut off some of the flower branches at the top to promote the development of lateral branches and provide conditions for the formation of flower buds in the later stage. When it enters the stage of vigorous growth, it is necessary to properly trim messy partially overlapping flower branches, parallel branches, malnourished thin branches, cross branches and so on, so as to ensure that the strong branches left behind can get sufficient nutrients.

3. During the dormant period

(1) truncation: the relationship between growth and fruit can be adjusted by cutting off those annual flower branches. Slight truncation was taken for young plants and heavy truncation was taken for diseased and weak branches of adult plants to stimulate the germination and growth of lateral buds after overwintering.

(2) thinning branches: cut off the branches on the crown from the base of the branches, some withered branches, disease and insect branches, unwanted drooping branches, cross branches, overlapping branches, etc., all need to be cut off, after cutting, it will increase the exposure of sunlight, which is beneficial to the growth of plants.

(3) retraction: it is a method of shortening flower branches, which is aimed at two-year-old or more flower branches, which are properly cut to adjust plant balance.
