Great progress has been made in maize breeding in South China.
There are 103 maize varieties (combinations) from 55 exhibitors in 17 provinces (cities). Many field investigations show that most of the exhibitors have normal growth and development. seedling potential, disease resistance and high yield potential are full.
In terms of seedling potential, under the condition of more precipitation and high groundwater level, 24 varieties showed strong seedling potential, 71 varieties showed medium seedling potential, and only 8 varieties showed weak seedling potential.
In terms of lodging resistance, continuous gale and heavy rain in mid-August led to lodging of some varieties. According to field investigation and statistics, a total of 13 varieties were lodged, 3 varieties with serious lodging, and the lodging rates were 29.6%, 36.3% and 56.9%, respectively. Other varieties showed good lodging resistance.
In terms of disease resistance, the resistance of southern paddy maize to leaf disease was very important. the results of field investigation of large and small leaf spot, sheath blight and rust showed that most varieties had strong resistance to large and small leaf spot, and sheath blight generally occurred lighter. Rust has spread.
Ma Shuping, deputy director of the seed Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture, lamented when visiting the exhibition area: "the south is the kingdom of rice." The south, which has always been famous for growing rice, has made outstanding achievements in maize breeding and performed well. According to the comprehensive characters of seedling potential, lodging resistance, disease resistance, high yield potential and plant type, 10 varieties are outstanding at present. Among them, 5 southern maize varieties (Jidan 7, Zhongdan 808, Fudan 4, Zhengda 999, Xiangyu 96) are on the list, accounting for half of the country. Among them, 12 southern maize varieties (Ludan 9088, Huajingtian 1, Zhonghe 606, Handan 777, Xinzhongyu 801, Xiannong 202, Jixiang 2188, Jinzhongyu, Kangnong Yu007, Xiangnongyu 24, Jin Doctor 1209, Hua Wan 505) occupied the top 3/5.
