Safety Certificate Review of transgenic insect-resistant Rice and High phytase Maize due in August this year

According to the Voice of China News and Newspaper Abstract, the Ministry of Agriculture announced yesterday (10th) that the fourth phase of Chinese super rice led by Academician Yuan Longping has exceeded 1000 kg per mu. The review and renewal of safety certificates for transgenic insect-resistant rice and high phytase corn due in August this year are being carried out according to regulations.

Tang Ke, director of the Department of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, introduced that the Ministry of Agriculture has organized experts to test the yield of the fourth phase of China's super rice per mu project led by Academician Yuan Longping, and the yield of super rice per mu has set a new record.

Tang Ke: The yield test results show that the yield per mu of the first phase of super rice in Xupu County of Hunan Province exceeds 1000 kg, creating a new record of 1026.7 kg.

Tang Ke revealed that, including "super rice", China has bred more than 370 new varieties of grain and cash crops during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period. In addition, China has achieved a series of major results in transgenic organism breeding. Eight core technologies such as gene cloning, transgenic operation and biosafety evaluation have been overcome, 96 key genes such as insect resistance, herbicide resistance, high quality and high yield have been obtained, breaking the long-term technological monopoly of developed countries. Cultivate new varieties of transgenic insect-resistant cotton such as Zhongmian 70, so that the market share of domestic insect-resistant cotton reaches 95%.

In response to the expiration of the safety certificate of genetically modified insect-resistant rice and high phytase corn in August this year, Kou Jianping, director of the Science and Technology Law Enforcement Division of the Department of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, said that at present, the renewal application for the safety certificate of insect-resistant rice of Huazhong Agricultural University has been received and is in the process of evaluation; the agricultural department has not received the application for the safety certificate of genetically modified high phytase corn.

Kou Jianping: According to the conditions for renewing the safety certificate, if there is no unsafe problem, the safety certificate should continue to be issued. As for whether to issue it or not and when to issue it, it depends on the progress of the evaluation process.
