China News Service, Rome, October 15 (Reporter Ouyang Kaiyu)-Chinese Premier Li Keqiang delivered a speech entitled "relying on Family Management to promote Agricultural Modernization" at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome on the 15th local time. Li Keqiang pointed out: we are willing to join hands with all countries in the world to create a world free of hunger, poverty and sustainable development.

Li Keqiang said that the theme of this year's World Food Day is "Family Agriculture: feeding the World and caring for the Earth." It is also in line with China's reality to rely on family agriculture to solve the problem of food. China's reform and opening up more than 30 years ago began in rural areas, through the implementation of reforms such as the household contract management system, the development of family agriculture, successfully solved the problem of food and clothing for the people, helped hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and achieved the United Nations Millennium Development goals ahead of schedule.

Li Keqiang pointed out: in order to reach a new level in China's agricultural production, we must appropriately expand the scale of operation and take the road of agricultural modernization. We will adhere to the basic position of family management in agriculture and promote the innovation of various forms of agricultural management. Protect farmers' land rights and interests, respect farmers' wishes, and encourage farmers with conditions to transfer land management rights.

Li Keqiang stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to agriculture, insists on achieving basic self-sufficiency in grain at home, and attaches great importance to the sustainable development of agriculture. China has solved the problem of feeding nearly 20% of the world's population with arable land and fresh water resources lower than the world average. We will continue to make intensive and efficient use of agricultural resources and further strengthen ecological protection and construction, not only to meet the needs of contemporary people, but also to leave fertile land, clear water and blue sky for future generations.

Li Keqiang said: everyone has something to eat, which is the most basic right of human beings to survive and the basis of all human rights. Promoting agricultural development and eradicating hunger and poverty are major challenges facing the world and the common responsibility of all mankind. The international community should join hands to strengthen agricultural cooperation, reduce trade protection, and pay more attention to and help developing countries, especially the least developed countries. China is willing to unreservedly share agricultural technology, agricultural equipment and agricultural development models with other countries, especially developing countries. In the next five years, the Chinese government will donate US $50 million to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization for agricultural South-South cooperation and increase support to the World Food Program and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

In conclusion, Li Keqiang said: as the largest developing country in the world, China is a positive force in safeguarding world food security. We are willing to join hands with all countries in the world to create a world free of hunger, poverty and sustainable development.

In his speech, FAO Director-General Graziano warmly welcomed Li Keqiang's visit to the FAO headquarters and thanked China for its strong support to the FAO. He said that China is a defender of food security, a promoter of the world's cause of poverty reduction, and a leader in achieving the UN Millennium Development goals. It is believed that China's agriculture will certainly make greater achievements and make greater contributions to world food security.

More than 600 people attended the event, including senior officials of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, permanent representatives of various countries to the United Nations food and food agencies, and representatives to the 41st session of the Committee on World Food Security. They responded with long and warm applause for Li Keqiang's speech. (end)
