How much room is there for grain conservation? On the eve of World Food Day on October 16, the reporter interviewed Ren Zhengxiao, director of the State Food Administration.

The postpartum loss of grain in China is at least 70 billion jin per year, nearly 6% of the total annual output.

"China has a bumper grain crop year after year, the market supply is adequate, and the current food security situation is good, but we should be vigilant. We should not forget to economize after a bumper harvest, and consumption should not be wasted." Ren Zhengxiao came straight to the point. at present, food loss and waste has become an important factor endangering China and even the global food security.

Ren Zhengxiao said: from a domestic point of view, the total amount of grain production and demand is basically balanced, but a large population and little land is the basic national condition of our country. With the increase of population, the promotion of urbanization and the upgrading of consumption structure, China's grain consumption will continue to show rigid growth, and grain supply and demand will be in a tight balance for a long time. At the same time, the postpartum loss and waste of grain in our country is more serious. It is estimated that only the postpartum loss of farmers reaches more than 70 billion jin every year, and the waste of consumption is even more astonishing.

What is the reason for the huge loss of post-natal grain? Ren Zhengxiao believes that at present, the postpartum losses of domestic grain are mainly reflected in three aspects: farmers' grain storage, grain storage and transportation, and grain processing. Due to reasons such as the general simplicity of grain storage equipment in peasant households, the loss rate of grain storage by farmers is about 8%, and the annual grain loss in this link alone amounts to 40 billion jin; due to factors such as open-air grain storage, dangerous old warehouses with sick grain storage, and other factors, the loss in grain storage and transportation has reached 15 billion jin; due to misunderstandings in consumption habits, some grain products are over-pursued for refined, fine and white, some low-level extensive processing, and grain and oil processing lose more than 15 billion jin.

There is a lot of room for grain saving and loss reduction in grain circulation.

"the potential for grain conservation and impairment in grain circulation is very great." Ren Zhengxiao stressed that, especially from the aspects of scientific grain storage by farmers, guidance to the transformation and upgrading of processing enterprises, and moderate processing, there are great prospects for reducing post-natal grain losses.

At present, there are 210 million grain farmers in the country, and less than 4 percent of them have implemented the special program of scientific grain storage for farmers. Among the domestic grain and oil processing enterprises, the production capacity of less than 50 tons per day accounts for about 20%, and the backward mode of production directly leads to a large number of processing losses and waste. From the experimental data, moderate processing can effectively improve the yield of finished grain and reduce the loss of rations resources.

At present, the State Grain Administration is vigorously implementing the special project of scientific grain storage for farmers. At present, a total of 8.17 million sets of new grain storage equipment have been allocated to 26 provinces across the country. after the application of equipment, the loss rate of farmers' stored grain has been reduced by 6%, which can reduce the loss of stored grain by 900000 tons per year. By vigorously carrying out the construction of storage facilities and the transformation of old warehouses in dangerous warehouses, and popularizing new grain storage technologies, the loss rate of dangerous old warehouses and open-air grain storage has been reduced by nearly 3% on average.

Ren Zhengxiao said that the next step will speed up the implementation of the special grain storage program for farmers, and at the same time, according to the characteristics of large grain growers and family farms, develop and develop new large grain storage equipment to help farmers reduce losses. We will speed up the transformation and upgrading of processing enterprises and improve the utilization rate of grain processing. In addition, through scientific revision of grain and oil processing industry standards, guide appropriate processing, constantly improve the comprehensive utilization rate of by-products, and reduce the loss and waste of food rations resources.

The implementation of "equal emphasis on grain production and grain conservation and loss reduction" is the strategic choice to continuously ensure national food security.

Solving the problem of feeding more than 1.3 billion people has always been a top priority in governing the country. Ren Zhengxiao believes that there are many factors endangering food security, but from the perspective of supply, it is mainly difficult to stabilize and increase production and great postpartum losses.

Ren Zhengxiao said: while vigorously developing grain production, we must vigorously reduce post-natal grain losses. To reduce the post-natal loss of grain is to economize the use of cultivated land and fresh water resources, reduce agricultural consumption and discharge, and develop "intangible fertile land" and achieve landless "production". Under the basic national conditions and grain conditions of our country, the policy strategy of "attaching equal importance to increasing grain production and saving grain loss" is the strategic choice to ensure national food security continuously.
