On the morning of October 10, the yield measurement results organized by the Ministry of Agriculture showed that the fourth stage of super rice in Xupu County, Hunan Province, led by Academician Yuan Longping, set a new record of 1026.7 kg per mu. This result was obtained through on-site scientific calculation in the 102.6 mu hybrid rice "Y Liangyou 900" experimental field in Hongxing Village, Hengbanqiao Township, Xupu County.

From 500 kg per mu to 700 kg per mu to broken tons of grain, Academician Yuan Longping's super rice project has steadily increased production over the past decade or so. This good news has made the broad masses of Chinese people feel excited and gratified. Just a few days ago, the scene of Meng Han, secretary of the Xupu County CPC Committee, helping farmers beat rice in the field also attracted the attention of many people.

In early October, Meng Han, who went to work in the countryside, passed by Huangmaoyuan Town and saw an old man threshing rice by hand, so he went straight into the field to help until he finished the task of threshing rice in a hilly field, according to online reports.

Academician Yuan Longping broke tons of grain and Meng Han, secretary of the county party committee, beat rice, which seems to be two unrelated independent phenomena, but in fact there is an inherent logical relationship. At a time when industrialization and urbanization are surging and agriculture is increasingly marginalized, in the contemporary era when food security is increasingly becoming a prominent problem in China, we can actually have a lot of understanding from the perspective of politics and economy.

As an author who came from a rural area in Hunan and has personally worked in rice fields for more than ten years, I would like to first share with you the main points about the work of beating rice.

Rice grows at the top of rice, a grass plant. If you want to harvest rice, you must try to separate millet from straw. In Hunan, the traditional method is to "pull the grass", that is, to beat the rice by hand. The gist of its action is to swing the hands of a bunch of about 200 rice crops tightly, looking hard at the edge of a wooden frame containing rice, so that the rice falls away from the straw and into the wooden frame. A bunch of rice needs to be beaten more than ten times to basically complete the process, while a mu of rice, about 25000 bags of rice, should be divided into 2500 bunches to beat. In other words, after beating an acre of rice, you need to keep beating hard 25000 times, this labor intensity can be imagined.

Later, with the popularization of mechanization, the use of "threshing machine" with toothed drum greatly reduced the intensity of rice threshing, but one of the disadvantages of this machine is the high loss rate of rice. While threshing machines have become popular in most places, there are still a few areas where manual rice is still used because they cannot afford equipment or for other reasons (such as to avoid rice loss).

Agricultural experts told Jieren Watch, such as Academician Yuan Longping's experimental field, that because of the need to measure yield, it is necessary to achieve accurate calculation of "grain return to warehouse" as far as possible, so hand-beating rice is a common harvest method. It is this scientific habit that makes many farmers in Xupu County prefer to beat rice by hand.

For a middle-aged man like Meng Han, secretary of the Xupu County CPC Committee, it is really not easy to finish beating a mound of rice from beginning to end. First of all, this is a high-intensity manual work, and some people may question that Meng Han is "putting on a show," but I think if he really wants to put on a show, he doesn't have to choose this kind of "rough work" so foolishly, and he works for hours at a time; secondly, this is also a loving job. When Meng Han saw the old farmer working in the field alone, I believe it was out of the heart of the people.

The key question is that, as a secretary of the county party committee, Meng Han went to the field to participate in the rice threshing, or a real "work-based" work.

In recent years, under the spring tide of industrialization and urbanization, many grass-roots cadres, from county to township and even village, have unconsciously abandoned agriculture and turned to attracting investment. Jieren Watch has seen many county party secretaries who are very busy every day, either turning to the dinner of various social investors, wandering in the "inspection" of other developed areas, or wandering in the land development planning. To be fair, most of them also want to bring development opportunities to their places of employment, trying to change the local landscape with large-scale industrial projects, real estate development and urban construction.

However, it has to be pointed out that it is in this grand narrative of "big project, big plan, big investment" that the "three rural issues" in many places have been marginalized. Farmers have become neglected, agriculture has become a marginal industry, and rural areas have become forgotten corners.

In China's political structure, the secretary of a county party committee is the head of a county, and the core factor why a place is called a "county" rather than a "city" is that its rural population, agricultural industry and rural area account for the local mainstream. In other words, the secretary of the county party committee should have been the first responsible person and the first follower of the "three rural issues".

The Secretary of the Xupu County CPC Committee in Hunan Province went into the field to beat rice, no matter whether he had the element of show or not, this is a thing worthy of good recognition. On the one hand, his rice-beating and Academician Yuan Longping's per-ton grain experiments have formed a logical echo of scientific research, sowing, and harvesting; more importantly, as an important experimental base for China's super rice-ton grain fields, the county party secretary of Xupu can walk into the fields and be able to seriously "work hard" once, which is the best political response and behavior demonstration.

With regard to this kind of behavior of Mongolia and Han, I do not want to raise the principle to a political level such as the "mass line." I just want to say that China needs Yuan Longping, an elite scientist like Yuan Longping, who works tirelessly for the security of more than 1 billion Chinese people. we also need more county party secretaries like Meng and Han who are clear-headed, act properly and never forget their true colors.
