Yao Xiangjun, director of the Geneva Liaison Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency in Geneva on the 15th that family agriculture is the key to ensuring global food security and reducing rural poverty. Countries should pay attention to the building of family agricultural production capacity and better integrate the concept of sustainable development with agricultural production.

Yao Xiangjun said: family agriculture is the main body of global agricultural production, and half a billion of the world's 570 million farms are owned by families. These household agricultural production units produce nearly 60 percent of the world's agricultural products every year. The United Nations General Assembly designated 2014 as the International year of Family Agriculture, reflecting the international community's recognition of the important contribution of family agriculture to global food security.

It is reported that family agriculture is a systematic issue, involving the ownership of the means of production, labor skills and education, the protection of women's rights and interests, the prevention of child labor and many other issues. October 16 is World Food Day, and this year is the International year of Family Agriculture, so the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization hopes to use this year's World Food Day to make people think about how to help family agriculture improve its ability to cope with climate change. how to better integrate the concept of sustainable development with agricultural production.

According to Yao Xiangjun, on this year's World Food Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations will not only hold a theme photo exhibition at the Palais des Nations, where the United Nations Office at Geneva is located, but also co-organize celebration activities with the canton of Geneva in Switzerland. Local family agricultural producers of the canton of Geneva are invited to display their own wine, cheese, fruits and vegetables and other agricultural products in the Palais des Nations.

It is reported that in promoting the development of family agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has launched in recent years the "Voluntary guidelines for responsible Governance of Land, Fisheries and Forest ownership within National Food Security". To provide technical support and guidance for countries in formulating agricultural development policies according to their national conditions, so that family agricultural producers can have equal access to agricultural means of production.

Yao Xiangjun said: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has always maintained a good cooperative relationship with the Chinese government, and for a long time, the Chinese government has adhered to the attitude of "teaching people to fish is better than teaching people to fish." unconditionally imparting its successful policy experience, management experience and agricultural techniques in agricultural production to some developing countries with weak agriculture will play a key role in enhancing the agricultural production capacity of these countries in the long term.

Yao Xiangjun believes that the Chinese government has always actively supported the work of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which sends a clear signal to the international community that China is concerned not only about its own food security, but also about global food security. We are willing to actively help developing countries facing food security challenges to enhance their agricultural production capacity.
