In 2011, the demonstration 100-mu yield of two-line strong dominant rice hybrid "Y Liangyou 2" was 926.6 kg per mu, which achieved the goal of the third stage of super rice in China.

Two-line hybrid rice technology is another great innovation in the field of agricultural science and technology in China after the success of three-line hybrid rice technology research. It ensures the world's leading position in hybrid rice technology research in China and leads the development direction of global rice heterosis utilization.

Due to the restriction of restoration and protection, the three-line method has some problems, such as the combination is not free, the utilization rate of germplasm resources is low, the cultivation of super-high-yield and high-quality hybrid combinations is difficult, the period is long, the yield is stagnant and so on.

The two-line method came into being. For more than 20 years, this technology has established the basic theory of photoperiod-temperature sensitive genic male sterile lines of rice, practical breeding and identification techniques of photoperiod-temperature genic male sterile lines, production techniques of core seeds and original seeds, and theoretical system of super hybrid rice breeding. the key technical systems for high and stable yield reproduction, safe and high yield seed production of male sterile lines were established, and the difficult problems of high yield and high quality, high yield and early maturity of hybrid rice were solved. It broke through the bottleneck of two-line hybrid japonica rice breeding and seed production technology, bred 170 practical two-line male sterile lines, prepared 528 two-line hybrid rice combinations and popularized them on a large scale, and realized the goal of the first, second and third stages of super hybrid rice breeding in China. 549 papers and 13 monographs have been published, which has formed a relatively complete theoretical system of two-line hybrid rice, enriched and developed the theory of crop genetics and breeding, and made a great contribution to the development of modern crop genetics and breeding. this technology has become an achievement of China's original and complete intellectual property rights, and has been listed as an important technical project of national foreign aid.

By 2012, China had promoted 499 million mu of two-line hybrid rice, increasing rice production by 11.099 billion kg and income by 27.193 billion yuan, covering 16 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
