The area of characteristic economic forest in China will exceed 40 million hectares in 2020.

Economic forest is a kind of forest whose main purpose is to produce fruit, edible oil, beverage, seasoning, industrial raw materials and medicinal materials. China's economic forest is rich in tree species resources, many kinds of products, long industrial chain and wide range of application. By the end of 2013, the planting area of economic forest in China was 37.81 million hectares, with a total output of 148 million tons. The annual output value of economic forest planting and collection reached 924 billion yuan, accounting for more than half of the output value of forestry primary industry. Economic forest income accounts for more than 20% of the per capita net income of local farmers, and has become an important source of income for farmers in rural areas, especially in mountainous areas.
