Based on the construction of long-term mechanism, the collection and conservation system of germplasm resources was established. The Ministry of Agriculture pays attention to the construction of a long-term mechanism for the conservation and utilization of grass germplasm resources, and has established a national collection and conservation system of grass germplasm resources, which is a trinity of collection and management, technology research and development, conservation and utilization. It mainly includes the collection and management system of national grass germplasm resources with the national animal husbandry general station as the core, 10 ecological regional technical cooperation groups as the main body and 56 cooperation units; the technological R & D system with collection, preservation, evaluation, utilization and technological innovation as the main content; the conservation and utilization system composed of 1 central bank, 2 reserve banks, 1 detached bank, 17 resource nurseries and national grass germplasm resources protection and management system.

To carry out the investigation of germplasm resources, the number of grass germplasm resources is among the highest in the world. Through large-scale and omni-directional investigation, the wild types of Chinese endemic species and main cultivated forage grasses as well as the species and distribution of wild related plants were identified, and a series of key protection lists were compiled. At present, China has preserved more than 50,000 grass germplasm resources, ranking first in the world, realizing the transformation from a large country in resources to a powerful country in resource protection, and improving the ability of sustainable development of grass industry.

Organize and carry out the character evaluation of grass germplasm resources and screen the excellent grass germplasm resources. The evaluation index system of agronomic characters and resistance of grass germplasm resources was established. according to the index system, the agronomic characters and resistance evaluation of grass germplasm materials were carried out systematically. at present, 16646 agronomic character evaluation and 7506 resistance evaluation were completed. 518 excellent germplasm materials were selected to provide excellent germplasm materials with optional characteristics for grass variety improvement and new variety breeding.

Strengthen the development and application of management system to realize the sharing of grass germplasm resources. The protection and management system of national grass germplasm resources was developed, and the information and physical sharing service platform was established, which realized the standardization, digital management and information sharing of forage germplasm resources. At present, it has provided more than 200,000 information consultations to scientific research, teaching and production units, and provided 6556 forage germplasm resources to major national scientific research projects, promoting the cultivation and promotion of new forage varieties.
