Asians deeply believe that the alkaline characteristic of plum is the folk prescription of health preservation, and the early low labor cost and stable climate created the prosperous export age of Taiwan plum. However, in the past 30 years, the plum orchard has undergone earth-shaking changes. Traditional 100-year-old plum trees are becoming more and more rare, plum appreciation accounts for more and more farmers' income, plums planted as vegetables have fixed spacing and height, and standardized single-planting plum orchards have emerged. what has happened in the past few decades?

Plum planting areas in Taiwan: Nantou, Kaohsiung, Taitung

Plum is a crop endemic to Asia, which has been planted in Taiwan, mainland China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia, with the largest planting area in Central and South China on the mainland, and the plum garden in Taiwan was also planted from Chinese mainland. The earliest planting record appeared in the ancient book Taiwan Government Chronicles in 1684, mainly distributed in the mountains of about 200m to 1500 m, found all over Taiwan.

According to official statistics in 2011, Taiwan's plum planting areas are mainly in mountainous areas such as Nantou (1591 hectares), Kaohsiung (1305 hectares) and Taitung (1584 hectares) (one hectare is about the size of 60 volleyball courts). These three places account for 78.5% of the planting area, and the total output of Taiwan in recent years is about 32000 metric tons.
