Last Updated: 2024/11/03, For cuckoos, there are many ways to reproduce, one of which is grafting. There are many methods for its grafting, but we generally use the top split grafting of twigs, which can make its survival rate very high, so let's talk about the specific methods.

1. Time

This method we use is actually better, but because of the environment and other reasons, we have to control the time well, and it is better to carry out this operation from May to June, because this stage of Meiyu will also come.

2. Rootstock

Generally speaking, we have to use the two-year-old rhododendron, which grows very well, as the rootstock. What we need to understand is that plants not of the same genus cannot be used as rootstocks, so their affinity will be much weaker. In addition, the thickness of the new shoot and scion should be the same. Generally, the species we use are jade butterflies and purple butterflies. And the scion is best to use the sturdy twigs of the cuckoo that grew in the same year.

3. Operation

The specific operation we need to do is relatively simple, first of all, we have to select a tender shoot about three or four centimeters long above its mother plant, and then remove the lower leaves, as long as we leave three or four leaves at the top, and then we cut the bottom to make it wedge-shaped, and the length of the cutting surface is controlled to be about 0.5 to 1 centimeter. Cut off two or three centimeters of the new tip that the cuckoo grew that year, then cut off the leaves in this section, cut about one centimeter longitudinally, insert the scion, then align the skin layer with the forming layer, and then tie it up with a plastic film or strip. After that, we have to put the scion inside the plastic film, tie the mouth of the bag tightly, and keep the humidity and temperature good.

When it is finished, we should put it under the shady greenhouse. We must not let the sun shine on it directly, and we should pay attention to whether there are water droplets in the bag. If not, we should untie it and spray it wet, and then re-fasten its scion. Usually a week after the scion, it will succeed if it does not wilt. After about two months, we can take off the bag and untie the belt next spring. Generally speaking, the survival rate is very high, and there will be several colors on one plant, which looks very beautiful, which is also the benefit of grafting.
