Last Updated: 2024/09/21, When we raised the yew at home, we all knew it was very good-looking. Did you know that it was male and female? Do you know how to tell the difference between male and female? First of all, we can distinguish by the leaves: the leaves of the female plant are straight, dense, ring-shaped and grow faster, while the male plant grows in two layers, and the growth rate is slower; secondly, we can distinguish by flowers: the male plant has pedicels and stamens, the female plant does not, the male plant grows below the leaf, while the female plant grows at the top of the axis.

I. Look at the leaves

First we can tell by looking at its leaves. Female plants usually have straight and dense leaves and grow extremely fast, while male plants grow relatively slowly. In addition, male and female can be distinguished by the way the leaves grow. If the leaves grow in a ring, it is a female plant. If it grows in two layers, it is a male plant.

Second, look at flowers

1. Appearance

Both female and male yew plants can flower. The flowers of male plants are nearly spherical in shape, the pedicels are short, yellowish and brown in color, about 5 - 6 mm in length, 3 mm in diameter, 6 - 14 stamens on them, similar to shield shape, and 4 - 9 anthers on each stamen. The female flowers are approximately spherical, pedunculate, and 5 to 6 mm in diameter.

2. Location of flowers

Male yew flowers normally grow below the leaves and appear in clusters. The flowers of female plants grow at the top of the flower axis, and the flowers are not close to each other. Secondly, we can also observe whether its flowers have stamens to distinguish, some are male plants, and no natural female plants.
