According to the department's survey and evaluation data on the quality and distribution of cultivated land in China, the average quality of cultivated land in China is generally low, according to news released by the Ministry of Land and Resources recently. The area of medium and low cultivated land accounts for 70.6% of the assessed area of cultivated land.

The Ministry of Land and Resources recently announced the announcement on the release of the main data results of the national cultivated land quality survey and evaluation. This is the second time to comprehensively find out the quality and distribution of cultivated land in the country since the Ministry of Land and Resources completed the first comprehensive investigation and evaluation of cultivated land quality in 2009.

According to the announcement, the total area of the national cultivated land quality survey and evaluation is about 135 million hectares (2.026 billion mu), of which the superior land area is only 3.852 million hectares (57.79 million mu), accounting for 2.9% of the total cultivated land evaluation area in the country. The area of higher land is 35.862 million hectares (about 538 million mu), accounting for 26.5% of the total cultivated land evaluation area in the country. The area of medium land is 71.493 million hectares (1.072 billion mu), accounting for 52.9% of the total area of cultivated land assessed in the country, while the area of low land is 23.865 million hectares (358 million mu), accounting for 17.7% of the total area of cultivated land assessed in the country.

From the perspective of national distribution, superior land is mainly distributed in Hubei, Guangdong and Hunan provinces, accounting for 90.6% of the total area of superior land in the country, while higher land is mainly distributed in Henan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi and other 12 provinces (regions), accounting for 89.4% of the total area of higher land in the country. Medium land is mainly distributed in 10 provinces (regions), including Heilongjiang, Jilin, Yunnan, Liaoning and Sichuan, accounting for 73.9% of the total area of medium land in the country, while low land is mainly distributed in seven provinces (regions), such as Inner Mongolia, Gansu and Heilongjiang, accounting for 89.3% of the total area of lower land in the country.

From the perspective of regional distribution, the average quality of cultivated land in the eastern and central regions is higher, while that in the northeast and western regions is lower.

According to the person in charge of the Land use Management Department of the Ministry of Land and Resources, the investigation and evaluation of cultivated land quality is mainly based on the comprehensive evaluation of cultivated land quality from the aspects of climatic conditions, topographic conditions, soil conditions, farmland infrastructure conditions, land use level, and so on, which reflects the production capacity of cultivated land, but does not take into account pollution factors.

The responsible person pointed out that the results of the soil pollution survey can be combined to better serve the rational and sustainable use of land resources. According to previous official disclosures, there are about 50 million mu of moderately and heavily polluted arable land that cannot be cultivated in China, most of which coincide with major grain-producing areas such as the Yangtze River Delta and the eastern and central regions. including some high-quality arable land.
