Recently, the China Food Safety Public opinion Research Center and Jiangsu Province Food Safety Research Base jointly released the China Food Safety Development report (2014). According to the report, although a series of food safety incidents have still occurred in China in recent years, "overall stability and improvement" is the fundamental aspect of China's food safety situation.

The qualified rate of agricultural residues in fruits and vegetables is over 96%.

The results of monitoring and spot check show that in 2013, the quality and safety level of major edible agricultural products in China showed a steady improvement, and the quality and safety of major edible agricultural products of residents were well guaranteed. Among them, in 2013, routine monitoring results of methamidophos, dimethoate and other pesticide residues in vegetables showed that the qualified rate was 96.6%. Since 2008, it has been maintained at a high level of more than 96% for six consecutive years. The detection results of methamidophos, dimethoate and other pesticide residues in fruits showed that the qualified rate was 96.8%, down 0.3 percentage points from 2012, and 1.2 percentage points lower than when fruits were first included in routine monitoring in 2009. Overall, the overall qualified rate of fruit quality in China remains at a high level of more than 96%.

In terms of animal products, in 2013, the Ministry of Agriculture monitored the residues of "clenbuterol" and sulfonamides and other veterinary drugs in 153 large and medium-sized cities in 31 provinces (autonomous regions). The results showed that the overall qualified rate of animal product quality and safety was 99.7%, the same as in 2012. The qualified rate of quality and safety of animal products has remained at a high level of 99% for five consecutive years since 2009, and has steadily increased.

Unqualified batches of imported food increased

Since the 1990s, the development of China's food import trade has shown the basic characteristics of continuous expansion of the total amount, gradual optimization of the structure and relatively stable market structure, which is playing an increasingly important role in regulating the relationship between domestic food supply and demand and meeting the diversity of the food market. In 2013, China's total imported food trade reached an all-time high of US $57.086 billion, an increase of 7.90% over 2012, and continued to achieve new growth on a high base. Among the imported products, the import trade volume of three categories of commodities, such as vegetable oils, grains and their products, vegetables and fruits, is nearly half.

However, it should still be noted that the batches and quantities of substandard imported food are on the rise as a whole. In 2009, the number of unqualified batches of imported food in China was 1543, which increased to 1753 batches in 2010 and 1818 batches in 2011. The unqualified batches in 2012 reached the peak of 2499 batches in recent years. In 2013, a total of 2164 batches of substandard food were refused entry for various reasons, which was significantly lower than that in 2012. In 2013, the top 10 sources of substandard food imports in China were Taiwan, France, the United States, Malaysia, Germany, Thailand, Italy, South Korea, New Zealand and Spain.

In addition, the researchers selected 2139 urban consumers from 58 cities (including county-level cities) in 10 provinces (autonomous regions) and 2119 rural consumers from the rural administrative villages under the jurisdiction of these cities. The results show that the supermarket has the highest degree of confidence in the food purchase place, and the commissary and roadside mobile vendors have become the most worrying food purchase places for consumers.

The report also shows that consumers' awareness of safeguarding their rights in urban and rural areas is increasing. Among the complaints of domestic consumers on product quality in 2013, the top five products with the highest number of complaints were food, furniture, cars, mobile phones and televisions. Food ranks first among all commodity complaints, and the problems focus on the deterioration of food during the shelf life, foreign bodies in beverages, quality problems of dairy products, unqualified food additives, unclear production dates, inconsistent names of meat products, and so on.
