China's soybean imports are expected to reach 82.66 million tons in 2024, up 15.8 percent from 2014, according to an official forecast released by the Ministry of Agriculture. But China is expected to import small amounts of net rice, wheat and corn over the next decade.

The China Agricultural Outlook Report (2015-2024) released by the Market Early Warning Expert Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture shows that China's feed output will grow slowly in the next 10 years, and it is expected that the output will reach 227.06 million tons by 2024, with an average annual growth rate of 1.5%, which is lower than the average annual growth rate of 7.3% in the past 10 years. China's meat consumption growth will also be slower than in the past decade, leaving pork imports at less than 1 million tons in 2024 and beef and mutton imports at less than 500,000 tons each.

As long as domestic supplies are sufficient, China's corn imports in 2024 are unlikely to exceed the quota limit of 7.2 million tons, the report said. The move comes after the USDA lowered China's corn imports for 2024/25 to 7.2 million tons, dropping previous forecasts that China's corn imports would soar.

China will import 3.2 million tons of rice in 2024, up 25 percent from 2014, the report said. Wheat imports in 2024 are expected to be 2.8 million tons, down 5.7 percent from 2014.

Analysts noted that China has made progress in increasing wheat and corn yields, but rice and soybean yields have increased only marginally, and soybean yields remain very low compared to the world average.

China's cotton imports are expected to be 2.08 million tons in 2024, down 14.8 percent from 2014, due to a decline in Chinese textile exports and an increase in the use of cotton substitutes, the report said.

China's white sugar imports in 2024 are expected to be 5.83 million tons, up 45% from 2014, mainly due to a decline in domestic production and an increase in demand. China's dairy imports will reach 16 million tons in 2024, an annual growth rate of 3%, which is lower than the average annual growth rate of 15.5% in the past decade, because China's domestic production is expected to grow at a rate of 2% per year.
