Australian avocado acreage has greatly increased, output has increased by 65%, and imported avocado prices have plummeted.
Avocado is a kind of fruit native to South America. In previous years, the price was relatively good. With the growth of the current acreage, the price has dropped sharply.
In recent years, due to strong consumer demand for avocados, Australian fruit farmers have followed suit, and many fruit trees planted in the past two years have begun to blossom and bear fruit this year. Coupled with the fact that avocados can grow all year round in many parts of Australia, supply has soared by 65% this year, and the market retail price is only about 1 big 3 of the previous one.
Australian avocado production is expected to reach 120000 tons in 2021, up from less than 80, 000 tons last year, according to ABC Agriculture. Data show that Australian avocado production in 2010 was only 39600 tons, an increase of 200% in 12 years.
According to the Australian avocado Association, Australian avocado production will reach 170000 tons in five years, more than twice as much as in 2026. The Australian avocado industry has launched a large number of publicity campaigns across the country, calling on people to eat more avocados, but still can not get rid of unsalable. Avocado consumption in Australian restaurants and cafes accounts for about 20 per cent of the market, and avocado consumption has also been affected as a result of the outbreak.
Despite the difficulties of unsalable sales, Australia is still importing large quantities of avocados. Australia imported 24700 tons of fresh and dried avocados in 2020, an increase of 64 per cent over 2019. Most of these avocados come from New Zealand and are mainly used to fill the market gap in the off-season of domestic production. Chilean avocados also entered Australia for the first time in 2020, and Chilean imports are expected to decrease this year.
According to Bloomberg, Australia's avocado exports accounted for only 4% of total production during the 2020 / 2021 season, mostly to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. In order to expand overseas markets, Australia has set its sights on Asia, increasing its exports to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong. The fall in avocado prices has also made Australian avocados more competitive in export markets.
At present, Australian avocado is expected to open the Indian market soon. China is also one of Australia's target markets, but it takes a long time to gain access to the Chinese market.
