Last Updated: 2024/10/07, At present, the process of improved varieties of walnut is relatively fast in China, and grafting has been used to breed seedlings in most areas. the commonly used rootstocks are common walnut, iron walnut, wild walnut, Juglans mandshurica, maple poplar and so on.   At present, Juglans regia L. seed breeding process is fast, most areas have been achieved with grafting methods to breed seedlings, commonly used stock types are common Juglans regia L., Juglans regia L., Juglans mandshurica L., Pterocarya L. 5 kinds.

1, ordinary walnut production in northern China, almost all ordinary walnut, with ordinary walnut as rootstock grafting superior walnut (except bubble walnut), used to call it "common stock" or "this stock". Walnut production in northern China is widely used, generally with poor quality of the clip walnut or soft walnut varieties, do not use early-fruiting type of thin-shell walnut. The rootstock affinity is strong, the interface is easy to heal, the grafting survival rate is the highest, the seedlings grow vigorously, the growth results are good, and there will be no early appearance. At the same time, common walnut as rootstock also has the ability to resist black line disease.

  2. Iron walnut is commonly used in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, and has a long history of application. It is two types of the same species as the bubble core. The nut shell is thick and hard, and the kernel rate is low (20% ~ 30%). Generally, it is not used as a fruit. Grafted walnut survival rate is high, is a walnut, Niangqing walnut, walnut Santai, white shell, fine walnut varieties of rootstock, hot and humid climate resistance. However, it is not resistant to cold and should not be used in northern areas.

  3. Wild walnut is mainly distributed in Jiangsu, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu and other provinces. It has good grafting affinity and is suitable for rainy and humid climate conditions in the south.

  4. Juglans mandshurica is cold-resistant, drought-resistant and barren. It is the most cold-resistant species in Juglans genus. It can be used as cold-resistant rootstock of common Juglans mandshurica to expand its cultivation range and is suitable for Northeast, North and Northwest China. The compatibility is not as good as common walnut, grafting survival rate and preservation rate are not as high as walnut stock.
