Stylosanthes is a leguminous plant, which is not only an excellent grass species for natural grassland replanting improvement and soil and water conservation, but also an important forage resource in the tropics. It was introduced to China in the 1960s. At present, the cultivated area is the largest in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian and Yunnan. So how to choose the seed of Stylosanthes? What are the methods of raising seedlings? Let's get to know it.

How to select Stylosanthes seeds?

With the gradual popularization of the planting area of Stylosanthes, its varieties are gradually enriched, especially in recent years, the Institute of Tropical crop Variety Resources of the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences has selected a number of new Stylosanthes varieties suitable for planting in the south, such as 184 Stylosanthes, Reyan No.2 Stylosanthes, Reyan No.5 Stylosanthes, Reyan No.13 Stylosanthes, Sika Stylosanthes, etc., and widely planted in Hainan, Guangdong and other southern China. Of course, the plant characteristics of different Stylosanthes varieties are different, growers in different producing areas must carefully screen and choose varieties suitable for local planting before seed selection.

What are the methods of raising seedlings?

1. Seed treatment

The hard seed rate of Stylosanthes seeds is high, and the germination rate is only about 15%. Soak the seeds in 80 ℃ hot water for 2 minutes before sowing, or directly grind the seed coat with bricks to improve the germination rate. It can be sown alone or mixed with Gramineae forage to establish artificial grassland.

2. Sowing seeds at the right time

Stylosanthes can be propagated directly by seeds, as well as seedlings and cuttings. During seed direct seeding, weeds should be removed and soil preparation should be fine. 7500 kg of organic fertilizer and 300,450 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer should be applied per hectare. The row spacing of strip sowing is 70-80 cm, the sowing amount is 4.5 kg per hectare, the row spacing of on-demand plants is 50-80 cm, and the seed is 1.5 kg per hectare. Sow seeds in humid weather from February to March, and then cover the soil slightly after sowing.

3. Seedling management

According to different varieties, planting area and labor arrangement, sowing and raising seedlings by stages and batches, and transplanting in stages and batches. Generally, a batch of seedlings are raised every 7 days or so and finished in 4-7 batches. In order to cultivate strong seedlings, usually sow 200-267 meters per kilogram of Stylosanthes seeds. Generally does not cover the soil after sowing, can use small four-toothed rake on the border surface light rake 1 times twice, when conditions can be covered with a layer of straw, and sprinkled with water. After 3 days, the straw mulch can be removed when the seeds are white.

4. Seedling raising and transplanting

Seed production should be based on seedling cultivation and transplanting. After direct seeding, seedlings and gaps in the plots with uneven growth and distribution should be replaced, and seedlings and gaps should be filled after rain. After transplanting, the seedling should be checked in time to fill the gap. If the seedling is too long, the tail can be cut and then transplant, and the fertilization management should be strengthened after transplanting.

Stylosanthes has well-developed roots and many branches, and has the properties of drought tolerance, acid tolerance, barren tolerance and short-term waterlogging tolerance. It is suitable for forage for livestock in winter. In addition to being used for forage grass, it can also cover, conserve soil and water and green manure. In short, the value of Stylosanthes has a wide range of uses, and growers should skillfully master their seedling-raising skills to promote their production and income.
