Can hermit crabs be eaten?

Hermit crabs can be braised and eaten in soup. But it is not recommended to eat.

Hermit crabs often have a very strong rotten smell when cooked. Sometimes hermit crabs and conch are mistakenly used to cook soup, which often makes the soup give off a faint rotten smell. The more hermit crabs are, the stronger the rotten smell is.

Why do hermit crabs sojourn?

Hermit crabs are extremely vulnerable to other animals because they do not have a hard carapace and their belly is soft and curly. Therefore, hermit crabs can only live in the empty shells left after the death of some snails to protect their soft bodies.

Hermit crabs' abdominal limbs have been reduced to only a barb, which makes it easier for them to hook on to the shell, while the left and right large claws can block the exit of the shell to resist foreign enemies. However, as the body grows, hermit crabs change larger shells every once in a while. If the shell they like already has a resident, then the two sides will have a life-and-death struggle, and the winner will have the snail shell.

How long can hermit crabs live?

The life span of hermit crabs is generally 2-5 years, but in a good breeding environment, they often live to 20-30 years, and the longest on record has lived for more than 70 years. The lifespan of hermit crabs has a lot to do with the environment. If the ingredients of water are not well prepared, then a few months can be regarded as a long time.

How to raise hermit crabs?

1. Temperature: the culture temperature of hermit crabs is not lower than 70 degrees Fahrenheit and not higher than 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Humidity: relative humidity 70%, absolute humidity about 50%, but most humidity meters are relative humidity. Hermit crabs like to be moist, but moist is not equal to muggy, so we must pay attention to ventilation and remember not to seal the feeding box.

3. Cushion materials: cushions are usually made of stone, sand and so on. Hermit crab is a creature that sleeps during the day and comes out at night. It usually hides in the sand and rocks during the day. Let the hermit crab feel safe, otherwise it is likely to commit suicide or self-harm in a state of excitement! The selected cushion materials should be clean and environmentally friendly, and should be disinfected for a few days so that the parasites and some toxic substances inside can be volatilized and killed.

4. Sea water: the water for hermit crabs cannot be tap water. the chemicals in it will kill hermit crabs, preferably sea water. Do not add salt to the water without sea water, because there is iodine in the salt we eat. Iodine is toxic to hermit crabs, and the water should be changed frequently.
