Why is there water in a well-protected beehive? The beekeeping expert will help you answer.
Many people find that there is a lot of water in their beehives, but obviously the beehives are well protected and there is no rain. Where does the water in the beehives come from? Let's take a look at what professional beekeepers say.
In fact, this problem is found by many new beekeepers, and it also causes trouble to many novice beekeepers. But in fact, it is a good sign for experienced beekeepers to see water in the hive, so why does it produce water in a well-protected hive? Why are experienced bee farmers happy not to worry but to see water in their hives? Here is the answer given by the beekeeping expert.
The appearance of water in the beehive is a sign of the coming of the honey season.
We all know that bees whether feeding larvae or making honey are carried out in a relative humidity environment. If we only feed the larvae at ordinary times, there is not much water in the hive, we do not seem to be very obvious, but if it is in the honey period, this phenomenon is very obvious, and the more obvious it is from the local honey period to the later stage, so how did the water come from? Why would experienced bee farmers be happy to see this phenomenon?
In fact, it is very simple, this is mainly the process of honey collection by bees. As we all know, the moisture content of the newly collected nectar of honeybees is more than 40%. The nectar will be processed after it is brought to the hive by the bees, and the processing process is to put the newly collected nectar in the nest for cooling. After the treatment of indoor bees, the moisture in the nectar will drop from more than 40% to less than 18%, and 20% of the moisture will be lost in the beehive. As a result, we seem to have water in the beehive.
In fact, the water in the hive is much more than that, and bees also need water in the process of feeding their larvae and building their hives, so what we see is not only the water produced by bees making honey, but also the water collected by water-collecting bees. when these water are combined, the hive looks wet, and water can be seen flowing out from the outside of the hive. But this also shows a problem, if we see the rapid production of water in the beehive, it means that our bees actively make honey, and the honey harvest is bound to be bumper, so experienced old bee farmers like to see water produced in the beehive, which is a sign of the arrival of the honey flow period.
How to deal with the water in the beehive
So what should we do if we find water in the hive? In fact, it is very simple, if there is not much water, we can ignore it, if it is too wet, we can put the back of the beehive a little higher, let the water flow out from the door of the hive, the relative humidity in the hive is already relatively high.
Some beekeepers suggest punching holes in the bottom of the hive or padding absorbent paper to reduce moisture, but in fact, professional beekeeping fever does not approve of this practice. The reason is that the use of absorbent paper we need to change frequently caused the workload, and the way of drilling has caused damage to the beehive, and the drilling is also easy to allow natural enemies harmful to bees to enter the hive, so this method is not recommended.
When we choose the moving environment for artificial breeding, we should not only ensure the temperature, but also ensure the humidity, that is, we are simulating the environment in a beehive. so if we can reduce the moisture content in the hive by strengthening the ventilation in the hive and tilting the hive slightly, we will reduce the change of paper and damage to the hive.
The above is the reason why there is water in the well-protected beehive shared by professional beekeepers. In fact, there is no need to worry about the presence of people in the beehive. The correct response should be the treatment described above. If you also find out what causes too much moisture in the beehive, welcome to share your message!
