How to raise turtles in winter? This is what you should do when you wake up from hibernation!
The tortoise is a variable temperature animal. The suitable temperature for breeding in winter is between 5 and 15 ℃. Generally speaking, when the winter temperature is below 10 ℃, the tortoise will hibernate. If the temperature is below 0 ℃, the tortoise may freeze to death. When the temperature rises to more than 15 ℃, the tortoise will wake up from hibernation. So, how to raise turtles in winter? What should I do after waking up from hibernation?
How to raise turtles in winter?
1. The temperature should be appropriate.
(1) Northern region: in the northeast, northwest and northern regions, the winter temperature is very low, the temperature is generally below 0 ℃, you can put the tortoise in the greenhouse to spend the winter, these places are heated, the temperature is usually between 15 and 18 ℃, the tortoise will not freeze to death in such an environment.
(2) Southern region: in the southeast, southwest and south, the temperature in winter is not very low, and the temperature is basically between 5 and 15 ℃. Turtles can be raised indoors, and turtles generally do not freeze to death.
(3) the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Central Plains: in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Central Plains, the winter temperature is relatively low, and the Huang-Huai region still has a long freezing period. You can consider using heating rods to warm the winter, or you can prepare a plastic box. Cover with wet soil or mixed sand, bury the turtles and spray water every few days to keep them moist.
2. The water level should be appropriate.
(1) the temperature is higher than 10 degrees: the water level in the fish tank can retain the normal water level, that is, twice the height of the turtle.
(2) the temperature is below 10 degrees: the water level in the fish tank should be kept at 3cm. If the water level is normal, once the temperature suddenly drops beyond the cold tolerance limit of the tortoise, it may freeze to death. If the turtle is buried in sand, spray water every few days to keep it moist.
3. Stop feeding.
Turtles are fattened in autumn to prepare for nutrition storage in winter; stop feeding 3-5 days before hibernation, then soak in warm water for three or four days to defecate and empty their intestines; when they are completely into hibernation, put it in a place where there is no noise; do not feed until you wake up from hibernation.
4. Points for attention.
The hibernating tortoise must be healthy, if it is not healthy, it must be treated and recovered before hibernation; the turtle must empty its intestines and stomach before hibernation; the place where the tortoise is placed should be quiet and do not move frequently; if it is placed in the greenhouse, keep it at a constant temperature, not hot and cold; do not bask the tortoise in the sun, or it will wake up halfway, and it will starve to death over and over again. If it is a young turtle seedling or a weak and sick turtle, hibernation is not recommended, but can be heated and raised for the winter.
What does the tortoise do when he wakes up from hibernation?
1. When the temperature rises to 15 ℃, the tortoise will wake up from hibernation. After waking up, the tortoise is relatively weak. Do not rush for food. Even if they are fed, they will not eat. They should be put into clean water to swim for a day or two so that they can defecate thoroughly.
2. After defecating, the turtle can be fed for the first time. The food should be high-energy food to restore the turtle's physical fitness, such as live fish, live shrimp, earthworms, raw meat, etc., but not too full.
3. After the first feeding, the turtle should be soaked in potassium permanganate solution for disinfection and sterilization, because the tortoise waking up from hibernation is weak and its resistance also decreases, while bacteria begin to breed in spring, and the tortoise is prone to disease.
Conclusion: the temperature is very low in winter, the temperature of turtle breeding should not be lower than 5 ℃, otherwise it is easy to freeze to death, you don't have to feed during hibernation, and don't rush to feed after waking up in hibernation, you should put it in clean water and let them defecate thoroughly before they can feed.
