We know that the tortoise is the little guy with the shell on his back and shrinks his head and limbs into the shell when frightened. Because it looks simple, honest and lovely, and its breeding is simple and convenient, many friends like to keep it as pets. So, does the tortoise hibernate?

Does the tortoise hibernate?

1. The tortoise hibernates from November to March of the following year. When the temperature is below 10 ℃, it wakes up when the temperature rises to more than 15 ℃ in early April of the following year.

2. Most of the places where the tortoise hibernates lie still in the mud at the bottom of the pond, or in the loose soil covered with straw. During hibernation, the tortoise does not eat or move. It is not until it wakes up that it begins to resume its activity and ingest a large amount of food.

3. Turtles can survive without eating in hibernation. Through research, scientists have found that their metabolic ability after hibernation is very slow. If the temperature gets lower and lower, the metabolic function will be slower. Moreover, they can survive by absorbing oxygen from the pond.

Second, how do turtles hibernate?

1. Two months before hibernation: fattening and defecating.

Two months before hibernation, the turtles should be fattened. Starting in September, the turtles should be fully fed twice a day for a month to store enough overwintering fat. In October, the turtles stop eating and soak the turtles in warm water. Use warm water to stimulate the turtles to remove their feces.

2. The day before hibernation: a place to prepare for hibernation.

(1) you can prepare a container, which is covered with thick wet sand and covered with newspaper. The turtle will sleep in the sand pile by himself and replenish water every half a month, or the container is filled with mud, and the tortoise will sleep by himself in the mud.

(2) you can put the turtle in the tank or box, add some wet cloth or wet sponge or wet sand to the tortoise, and then put a cover on the tank or box, with a certain air vent on the lid, and replenish water every half a month.

(3) the turtle can be placed in wet moss or moss + coconut soil, this method can maintain humidity for a long time, and its excreta will be absorbed by moss so as not to pollute the turtle.

(4) if there are a large number of turtles, the turtles can be picked up from the pond and placed in a quiet and empty room. The turtles are stacked on 2-3 layers, covered with 30 cm straw soaked for half a day, and then watered once every week or so.

(5) if they are young turtles coming out of their shells or sick turtles, hibernation is not recommended because of their poor disease resistance and physique, and their reserves of fat and nutrients are too low to last until the beginning of spring next year.

3. After waking up from hibernation: defecation, feeding and disinfection.

Don't disturb the turtles when they hibernate. when you wake up, put the turtles in clean water for a day or two, let them defecate thoroughly, then feed them high-energy food, and finally soak them in potassium permanganate solution for disinfection and sterilization.
