1. What is rumination?

Ruminant refers to that some animals return semi-digested food from their stomachs to their mouths to chew again after eating for a period of time. When cattle eat forage or lie down to rest, people will see cattle chewing continuously into food balls and swallowing them again. It takes about 1~2 minutes each time. It takes about 6~8 hours to ruminate every day. It can make a large amount of forage thin and soft, and quickly pass through the rumen to the digestive tract behind. 2. When does a cow ruminate?

When cattle are sick, overtired and strongly stimulated from outside, rumination behavior can be weakened or completely stopped. Once rumination stops, food remains in rumen. 4. Why do cattle ruminate

Cow rumination is due to the special setting of cow stomach. The cow stomach is divided into rumen, reticule, abomasum and abomasum. Only abomasum secretes gastric juice. The rumen volume of cattle is 100~300 liters, accounting for about 80% of the four stomach parts. There are a large number of microorganisms in the rumen, including protozoa (mainly ciliates) and bacteria. The rumen itself does not secrete enzymes. All enzymes in the rumen are produced by microorganisms. The fiber in the forage is fermented and decomposed under the action of enzymes produced by these microorganisms, and most of the lower fatty acids formed are absorbed by the rumen wall. The reticular stomach is in front of the rumen, against the diaphragm and liver. The inner wall of the reticular stomach is honeycomb-shaped, and microbial digestion is also carried out in the reticular stomach.
