Second, how are seeing eye dogs trained?

From weaning to one year old, guide dogs are sent to live in foster families two months after birth, adapt to a variety of social environments, and live in harmony with people. They begin to receive professional skills training at the age of one to one and a half years old. They are taken back to the guide center for professional training. The main training includes: do not bow your head to smell, walk in a straight line; react quickly when you encounter obstacles, avoid obstacles in time; stop before going up and down stairs, learn to take means of transport and cross the road; lie still in public places, hold back urine, and resist all kinds of temptations.

After that, he will live with his new owner for a month, which is the last part of his training. He needs his blind owner to participate in the training, and the owner should also learn how to give instructions to the dog, feed the dog, take care of the dog and have a physical examination. Dogs should be familiar with the living environment of blind owners. They all have a tacit understanding with each other and pass the assessment before they can be brought home to live together by their blind owners. In the whole training process, the assessment is very strict, and the chances of elimination of blind guide preparation dogs are as high as 70%. Blame is arranged to be a service dog or a comfort dog.

After that, when the dog is 8-10 years old, the guide dog will always live with the owner, help the owner in daily life, and take the owner to where he wants to go. If the seeing eye dog wants a new owner, it needs to take testing and training again to get back to work.

Guide dogs will retire at the end of their service at the age of 10-12, and the guide dogs will be arranged to return to the base for retirement. The original users of the guide dogs will have priority to stay and take care of the dogs until their old age. If they are unable to take care of them, the original foster families or volunteers can also apply to take care of the guide dogs in their old age.

If you want to apply for a guide dog, you need the blind person or his family to apply to the domestic guide dog organization, and the organization will send someone to make an on-the-spot inspection. After passing the inspection, the blind who meet the requirements will be arranged to get along with the guide dog for about a month. After they are familiar with each other, they still have to pass a strict examination. Only by passing the inspection can they live together.
