Throughout the year, European velvet ducks feed on invertebrates, such as molluscs, worms, crustaceans and so on. It gets most of its food from the bottom of the sea, so it likes to swim in the shallow waters of the continental margin.

European velvet duck ring is distributed in the north, there are 6 subspecies, the main difference lies in the length and color of the mouth, the male color type is different, and all have a unique green tone on the head. Pacific velvet ducks distributed in Alaska, northeastern Siberia and northwestern Canada can be distinguished from other species in terms of their size, beak shape and V-shaped marks on the male throat. The upper body of the male is mainly white, the top of the head, abdomen and tail are black. The body is large and round, and the beak is raised. Most of the body of the female velvet duck is brown, the female duck is somewhat like a sesame duck.
